Mr Whippy, Thanks for that... you've got me thinking that mine are a ticking time bomb now! :? :P

I check mine regularly, both visually inspecting the inner side part, as well as checking the pressures.

I think all is ok with me..... so far... (touch wood).

Latest is that BMW will not approve the works and that the wheels are not covered under warranty. Deaer that sold me the car have said they willpay for one wheel and i will have to pay for the other!

So did BMW say it's pothole damage? Out of true? It's amazing that so many are cracking but they think it's the driver. It's not like we knew all this when we bought the cars. I guess I'll have to get mine looked over this weekend!

All this certainly puts me in a 'never again bmw' feeling :(

Yup, pothole damage etc. I must admit I have had some shocking hard hits over potholes from time to time, but have never thought they would cause the wheels to crack.

Will seriously be modifying the way I drive from now on......

My round 18" Ellipsoids, well one of them, became not so round on the back inside edge.

Not sure where/when it happened, and it's balanced up fine, but you could see the edge move in/out slightly when the wheel was on the balancing machine. A bit soft bend (not a localised dink)

I can imagine with really hard/firm tyres and even smaller sidewalls, that a good hard dink can crack the alloy rather than bend it as in my case.

Two routes, they are either bendy, or crack. I'd go with the bendy option... you can always get it repaired relatively easily. But cracks, hmmmm...

That said, anyone remember when the biturbo RS4 came out? Those 18" multispokes bent like they were made of cheese. Almost every owner had new wheels eventually (must have changed the alloy!?)

No real fix for this, it's just the price you pay too have 19" wheels and RFT I'd imagine. Throw on a normal tyre and I bet the cracks are more likely to end up as bends/dinks that can be straightened out.

Car back, good as new but I'm driving like a frickin old lady now......it's not good. Put off my Z4 now

change to non-runflats and mobility pack?
Change alloy to different style/size?

I just sent £1000 on 3 runflats.....not sure I'm going to buy non runs now. And if you have any issue with anything steering based, or suspension, guess what BMW will say.......

So would it be better to replace your current 19" wheels with a set of OEM 18", you then don't have to drive like an old biddy and then sell the old ones on eBay, surely you could get £1k for them

How about these?

Have not checked inside edges on mine but all four were down by 0.5 bar. will recheck at weekends. I did mention to salesman an dealer principle about the problem as it was on watchdog etc and was told it was all fixed.
What about a wee e mail to watchdog, they would possibly use it as a rehash/ follow up of original story to generate fresh interest. Which I'm sure would worry BMW UK and their image

Called Tim Abbotts office today and told by service head that 296's not identified as being a problem wheel...and to be on my way. Gesture of one wheel payment was good, they said, by the dealer...so be happy. I am buying 2 spares from eBay guy for £200 each to be on safe side......£440 a wheel is a crazy price at stealers....

So they are admitting they have a problem with SOME 19" wheels? Have the 296s been tested enough as they are fairly new and on a fairly small model of car. I would push the watchdog thing, what do you have to lose :(

I think Tim Abbott's office is trying to fob you off.
the only wheel consistently mentioned on e89 post, and here, seems to be the 296. please check out e89 post forum (which is a more international forum).
So far i have not read of any problems with either 326M or 313M, so they may be options if you want to stay at 19in and go with runflats. the alternative is to go smaller with 17 or 18 in.

i think the problem is that they have sold >60,000 e89 Z4s so far, and perhaps only about 50 or so people complaining on forums, which would suggest <0.1% of z4 owners. whilst this is only based on sampling, i imagine that at most it only affects 1% of people, and for the most part, BMW can blame bad driving, which some people will just accept to avoid the hassle.

clearly even 0.1% is too much, but unless a class action is taken, it is probably something that BMW will just ignore (since it is likely to be smaller than the natural 'wastage' of customers who migrate to other brands)

I'm on the same Forum Braingirl, and have seen the posts...in the far east it seems that the dealers are changing the wheels under warranty.....

Am really pissed off..... :headbang:

Isn't fate a funny old girl.. There I was worried about the potential cost of new 296's when I just avoided an incoming learner driver and scraped a 270 degree gauge out of the drivers side 296. Great. Can't be worried now cos I'll have to replace the damned thing anyhow!
