Just come across an interesting video about wheel sizes in relation to performance. I was thinking to go to 19” but I think now I will stick with my 18s

Silverstar said:So the 17s would be best for road driving, except the really do look too small LOL. I know many here say even the 18s look too small on the Z but I think I will stick with the 18s, with normal tyres (non run flats) the car rides and handles just fine. Also I've only just recently spent 400 odd quid on the tyres  Pbondar so are you still on 17s?
mr wilks said:Enjoyable clip Silverstar but not sure how you reached the conclusion to stick with 18s over 19s :? Unless i missed something defining there was no outright winner in any of the 3 sizes to warrant someone changing from 19s to 18s or 17s to 19s :?
In the guys summary he mirrors my own thoughts on the subject in that the end user will find more noticeable difference between tyre brands / specs than he would from changing between sizes 17 - 18 -19 but using the same brand tyre .
In short if you choose the right size rubber & right brand manufacturer you can enjoy a 19inch wheel on any Z4 without compromising in any department .
In all the tests in the above clip the actual margins were down to a second & that was thrashing a hot hatch around a track .
Lastly as with most tyre reviews , they would be far more relevant if carried out on the same vehicle you were intending to fit the tyres to as a fwd turbo charged hot hatch is unlikely to handle anything like a rwd 2 seater na E89 E85 E86
Ultimately its down to personal preference which size wheels & which brand tyres the end user prefers :driving: in the end that's what really matters![]()

I've got 18" with Goodyear F1 Asymetric 3 on and am happy with the ride comfort / noise and handling they give. I was thinking at some point in the future to change up to 19"s for the looks! (when my new tyres have worn out lol!) but I don't want to loose too much of the comfort that I have especially since I am also thinking to upgrade the suspension either just springs like Eibach or full kit like the Bilstein B12 which will firm up the ride a little anyway. Which tyres on a 19" rim would you suggest that wouldn't loose too much of the confort that I get from the 18s?

I decided to put 17 inch P4s on the E89 betting that the original engineering Plus better rubber would give me all I needed. The ride is lovely and it still bends a line so hard it can toss you against the door without sliding. I really need more side bolster.

I think your Goodyears are already in the top 5 so brandwise no reason to switch , i'm guessing now the oe 18s you are running 255 35 18 rear / 225 40 18 front ?
Switch to 19s for example style 326s which from factory run 255 30 19 , no reason why you can't go 245 35 19 or 255 35 19 so zero loss of comfort , better rim protection & enhance the looks . the front 19s 225 35 19 on 8j id leave as is though you could go 235 .
Its only Bmw that run the skimpy tyres ( Audi VW Mercedes all run bigger on same sized rims) though it seems they've finally seen sense & changed up on the G29 18s & 19s .
For comparison the 911 997 i have is on 19s , the front wheels are 8j same as style 326 but oe tyre size is 235 35 19 , plenty of comfort plenty wheel protection .
As the vid clip highlights , you can't just say one size is better than the others , there are way to many defining factors that need considering![]()
