Wheel Setup for 4 x 8Js

I have just realised that the wheel setup on my E85 3.0i (2003 model) is not either the standard 17" setup or the staggered 18" setup which I had thought I had until today when I inspected the wheels. I actually have 4 x 18" 8J 135S wheels. I am trying to work out what the best tyre size is until I can afford to switch two of the 8Js with 8.5Js. Is the best bet 225 40 18s all round? Your thoughts would be much appreciated as I have searched the forum, but no-one seems to have this odd combination?

Are they reps ? Very often the 4 x 8j are  the offsets stamped on the rear will tell you
I wouldn't worry whatever though & continue with either staggered tyres or switch to 4 x 225 40

Thanks for the quick reply, sorry I don't know what "reps" are do you mean replicas? If so, I am not sure, they are stamped "for 3 series and made in the EU". All of the wheels are all stamped 8J, is this the offset you refer to? I have recently put two new 225 40s on the front, as at the time I thought I had the staggered setup. I would like to go staggered but don't believe I can put the usual 255 35s on the 8J rear wheels? What is the max size that would be safe on the back, and keep the tyre profiles correct too? Cheers

You could fit 245 35 rears & 225 40 fronts for visual difference & wider tread on drive wheels
255 is probably too much for the 8j rim & will give a ballony look on he tyre wall
You can play around with set ups here http://www.willtheyfit.com/
The offset will be stamped with Et before it & should be anything from 32/50 , OEM 8j MV2s are Et47

If I were running squared wheels, I'd run square tyre sizes (me personally).

I ran a staggered tyre setup on square wheels on my first Smart and looking back, it was a bit mismatched.

Plus a wider contact patch on all four corners too.

Thanks for the response, would you opt for four narrower (225s) or wider (245s) if you were keeping them all the same, I assume wider from your last sentance? :?

Cheers for the info. Based on what you have both said, it seems 4 x 225 40s are the best setup for now . I will go with that until I can get some 8.5s for the back if it is really worth doing? Is the staggered setup more a cosmetic thing or will it really improve the handling?

I would consider the more 'standard' 225 tyres all round on 8j wheels. My summer wheels are staggered 18" (108's) 8j 225 front and 8.5j 255 rear (vredestein vorti non run flats), whilst my winter set up is 17" 8j with 225 all round(Michelin Alpin A4). The car is definitely not as well planted and tramlines very slightly on the summer wheels and tyres. It handles better and is a nicer, more solid, drive on the 17" wheels and 225's. This is just my own experience and others may disagree.

I too have 4 j8 and running 225 40 18 all round ,so you not the only one ,I think my wheels are reps too .I bought the car in October ,I didn't know about the normal set up ,I not had any trouble with the car though .what makes mine worse is that I have a different make of tyre on each corner,I will put all four new tyres on soon but all the tyres look new ,and seems a shame to waste good tyres .

Glad to know I am not on my own. I assume reps are replica wheels? I have already recently changed the fronts, but have different makes/wear on the rear two. I would say it won't take long for you  to wear those odd tyres down, maybe you can enjoy the driving whilst you wear them out?
