Wheel refurb... Powdercoat, or paint?

I plan to have my winter wheels fitted next week, and then get my summer 19's refurbed in a different colour.

I've been quoted £350 cash for a full refurb from one outlet, with a paint job.... Gun metal grey.

Second place - which is much more reputable said £400 for a shadow chrome finish.

The first place said that paint leaves a better finish.
The second place... Which i trust more, said powder coat is more durable and with a shadow chrome has a better finish.

Is it worth £50 more though?

£100 per wheel seems quite steep to me.

Any advice? Or recommendations?

I refurbed my winter 108's myself... Total cost was about £70 inc buying the prep tools for my drill.
 
I had my VMR's powder coated and I think the surface is much, much more durable. The little bit you sacrifice in finish will be made for in the years of not dealing with chipped up wheels.

Just hit the powder coat with a nice hard wax. That's what I do anyway. Putting paint on wheels sucks because they are always in the elements. Rocks dirt sand water mud oils from the road. It's kind of a nightmare haha
 
IMO Powdercoat all the way.... powdercoat is better long term as it is 'bonded' to the alloy better, and a harder, more resilient finish. :thumbsup:

Doesn't seem too far out of the way, i used to work in the lab at a paint manufacturers testing PC as well as wet paint, it is much more durable than an exterior acrylic resin, also no need for a primer so they should sandblast and then PC, should look lovely as long as it's not applied too heavily, it can look like orange peel if it is. :thumbsup:
 
Local company in Lincoln quotes 80 - 100 per wheel for a full strip & powder coat. Recommended by the local body shop who did my front bumper (Brooklands) - if you want, I'll dig out their leaflet (its stored somewhere in the "I've tidied your desk" filing system my wife adopts...)
 
Tyr getting a quote from your local Wheel Specialist - they are franchised. As the others have said, powder coating is definitely not as good a fniish as painting, but far more durable. Brake dust just seems to eat away painted finishes so easily.

I would always prefer powder coated.

I paid about £340 to have my dynamics powder coated and a buckle removed from two at the same time. That was Lepsons, or Platinum as they are now, in Swindon
 
I've seen powder coated wheels look great, and a set if mine a coated making them very durable for our rubbish climate and salt in the winter. Caution does need to be considered rough as it seems some wheels don't react well to powder coating....

I got quoted £312 excluding split rims for stripping, repairing and powder coating my 18" alloys by this company http://www.thewheelspecialist.co.uk

They offer a variety of colours including OEM and their work looks good from what I have seen. Aldso been some recomendations by other members who have also used them.
 
That £400 place was the wheel specialist in derby/ burton on trent. I've seen their work it is fantastic, same day service... Not that i need them for another 3 months.

Seems like i need a few more quotes. My wheels are not in bad condition.. One curb which i patched up myself... Just fancy a new colour!

thanks for the offer... Thats ok... I dont mind something thats far away as long as its on the m1 as i travel down this all the time.. Lincoln is a little out of the way for me.

incidentally i also asked for a quote for my winter 108's and came back with £340... Which is why i did them myself in the end... Was quite enjoyable really... Just fancy a perfect job for my main wheels... Which my diy effort is nowhere near :lol:

I used to do powder coating in my past life,powder is more durable but the finish is not as good. Best way is after shot blasting powder coat primer & then wet paint your chosen colour then powder coat clear lacquer. Then That way you get durable & good finish. :thumbsup:
 
Had my 5 series wheels refurbed and powder coated in Letchworth, fabulous job. Place is a bit of a state, but results were exceptional and durable, a previous refurb on same car at Lepsons only lasted 12 months. £220 cash for the set.
Again, I say the the place is a bit of a shocker! But their results speak for themselves
