wheel change/refurb . mv2's to 108's

got a set of 108's on there way north from the smoke :)
when searching for a zed they were my first choice of wheel ideally but didn't want to miss a great car cause the wheels were not 108's
anyhow they need a refurb & i'm torn ?

also do i
1) pay £240 for a reasonable job / local guy
2) pay £360 for a top job /excel wheels
3) have a go myself & spend £75 for a satisfactory ( &above all rewarding) job

DIY refurb is easy. Ive done it a few times and plenty info on here. You do have to split them though...

Really the decision is all about time, money and your DIY skill.

is the splitting of them a big deal ? torque settings etc ? do they part easy ? the car will hardly ever see bad weather :o & is garaged when not in use
have garage + the time & quite confident on achieving the final finish but don't want to attempt the split if its a pro job ?

When you split the wheel does it need to be stripped of the tyre or deflated or doesn't it matter. :?

You'll need to take the tyre off to get inside the rim. Not worth doing if you havent got the tyre off and can strip fully IMO.

To the OP - as per cj's comments, if you're confident in your own DIY, I would do that, and go for an OEM look. If not, get them properly done, bearing in mind you'll have more choices and can get a custom finish etc
 
I wasnt a fan of darker wheels on a black car, but since I got mine done (which are a little darker than I'd hoped for), I wouldnt change them back.

Without changing the actual wheels, it gives the car a much more aggressive look IMO
 
Can I ask who / where your local guy is?

I've got a set of 135s (MV2s) that I'm looking at getting done soon, and I'm not far from you (Ramsbotom, near Bury) so always good to get recommendations.

AWR (Alloy Wheels Refurbished) in Bury are the only ones I know near me.
 
Oh - and yes to the dark inner - if it suits the car colour though! What colour is yours?

Think I'm going to go shadow chrome / smoke chrome on my 135s (on a Maldives Blue car).
 
Cheers Adamski. I'm tempted on a slightly darker inner but also on shadow chrome. It really is a very difficult decision to make cos once they're done it's a bit dear to change :(
 
Which paint do you use if you want an OEM finsish and you fancy DIY? Or is it a case of getting something very similar and doing all the wheels the same?
 
Splitting is easy using a 12 spline 'torx'. Only issue is if you strip or damage a bolt.
Tyres need to come off seating surfaces.
OEM finish is polished lip, but takes maintenance even when lacquered.

Latest iteration for me is a pro job. Powder coat chrome lips, wet finish smoke chrome stars and powder coat black inners. Should last longer than normal refurbs.
 
Hi CJ, where did you have yours done? They look great, if you could supply the number that would be great. I want stock star look but chrome painted inner and lips , being that you have tried refurbing but say they still require maintenance I'm guessing that means the laquer easily peels off a DIY polish lip requiring yearly re polish? mine have sat around for ages but want to bite the bullet and just have them refurbed ASAP.

did a great job on my previous bm alloys but for £220 it was face only repainted & lacquered & with the 108's i want all inside doing also.

My latest refurb was done by 1st class alloys in Lichfield. Small independant. He's done lots of sets for me and other forum members and is a top notch pro. Real pride in his work. Give him (Paul) a call.

Trouble with 108's is that corrosion starts between the star and outer and soon works under lacquer or from the tyre outwards. You can delay it by regular cleaning and waxing, but it's an inherent weakness.
This time I'm trying something different and have had the lips mirror chrome powder coated and I defy anyone not on hands and knees to see the difference Vs polished. Hopefully with powder coat inners too the surface will last longer.
 
I have used the wheel specialist in Manchester with good results but you are looking at around £300 for splits as there is more work involved.

Personally i would have them done properly,and have the OEM look with the rim being diamond cut not polished..

Laquering over a polished lip will not last at all..
 
I've sent a quote request over to Paul. Lichfield isn't that far from me and would be worth the travelling on cJ's recommendations. I contacted rimstock recently and they were talking over 100 quid a wheel!
