Wheel bearings

Just been told that I need an osr wheel bearing and its going to be £231 + vat! Seems pretty steep to me but apparently you have to change the hub and also realign the suspension. Anybody had to replace one? Can you give me an idea if this is reasonable or if they're trying to fleece me?

Can't see why you would have to realign the suspension, best to shop around for price, assume that was main dealer.

Is there a fail-safe way to tell a duff wheel bearing?
Still trying to decide if the noise from the back I get is the transmission or a wheel bearing; it's like a low pitched hum. Same tone on corners or straights.
Maybe it's just me not being used to a RWD car.

Sounds the same as I have. My mechanic had a quick look the other day but said there was nothing obvious. Only hear it above 45mph or so...when the roof is up. I'm hoping it's just a wheel bearing on the way out :?

Bad bearings tend to be more of a rubbing or scrapping type noise than a hum, and it tends to sound worse while cornering, which adds weight to the problem corner. A hum could just be normal diff noise (or abnormal), or even tyre noise, the sound deadening at the rear of the zed is terrible. That and the fact you're practically sitting on top of the rear axle. The roof up makes a decent sound reflector, and down it's an added sound insulation from the rear end.

That said, all I hear in mine is road noise, much like white noise, no humming. But certain tyres can be prone to droning, especially at moderate speeds.

Got mine sorted on Monday. Supply and fit rear wheel bearing = £98 inc vat!!

Found a local mechanic who is a top bloke and really knows his stuff. Well priced too - £30 an hour. Happy to share his details of anyone needs a mechanic in Milton Keynes area?
