Evening

If (and it’s a big if) I were planning to change the wheels on my e85 2004: what offset and fitment should I be looking for?

Currently on 17s pictured- does anyone know what style these are? Don’t think they are z4 originally?

They look like Style 105s to me which were a Z4 wheel and are staggered, so if you have wider rears than fronts I reckon that is what they are!

Fronts are 8J x 17 with ET46 and rears are 8.5J x17 with ET50.

Standard 18" E85/86 wheels like 108s, MV2s etc. are 8J ET47 fronts and 8.5J ET 50 rears.

BMW E46 3 Series use exactly the same sizes.

But there are loads of other options that will fit, it just depends whether you want to stick to OE or try something else! I fitted a set of E89 Style 295s to my last Coupe that were 8J x 18 ET29 fronts and 8.5J x 18 ET40 rears and didn't have any issues with rubbing, even though with those offsets they sat much further out in the arches. No need for spacers to get that effect!

BMW E90 3 Series wheels would probably work quite well too as their offset will sit the wheels further out than E85/86 ones.

It's probably easier to find some you like then use a site like "willtheyfit" to get an idea of how they would sit on your car.

This might help... These are all the standard wheels offered on a e85 z4. Click on the wheels and youll get the widths and offsets. Generally you can fit wheels from other cars ( e46, e9x) with similar or slightly wider widths ( up to 1 inch wider, ish), and similar or perhaps slightly lower (up to -10ish) offsets.

I'm slowly convincing myself to splurge on a nice new set of wheels at the moment. The ones I'm looking at are,

Front: 8J x 18 ET35
Rear: 9J x 18 ET 35

These will sit lovley on the e85.

I currently have 224's with 10mm spacers on the fronts. The new wheels will sit 3mm further in without a spacer on the front and the rears will sit 5mm further in.

To buy or not to buy 🤔

18in staggered wheels from e90 bmws tend to be same widths, but lower offsets by 12-13mm, so go straight on and sit a little better too.

No problem - now you can lose hours browsing and checking fitment!

Sometimes it's nice to find something a bit different! I put a set of E89 wheels on my 3 Series earlier this year as they looked so much better than what it had.

I have MV3s from an E90 on my E85. They are 8J x 18 Front and 8.5J x 18 Rear and offsets are ET34 Front and ET37 Rear. Standard tyre sizes of 225/40
and 255/35. No rubbing at all since fitting new B4s all round and refitting the original SE springs. They sit just about perfect in my opinion and no spacers  20200613_211713.jpg

Thanks all much appreciated.

I’m happy to find my 105’s are also z4 oem- always bugged me that I wasn’t sure where they came from

Now to weigh up options of what next

I created this spreadsheet when looking for my wheels + tyres.

Its quite helpful for quickly working out what size generates what offset if you're trying to go outside of the E85/E46 realm.

Instructions:
  • Fill in the orange boxes with your current rim sizes and the new rim sizes you have found.
  • Add any spacers if necessary.
  • It tells you how much further out the rims will be on your new set compared to your current set.

Note: The OK / Not OK box is set to 12mm for the front and 15mm for the rear (its just what I wanted as a max). If you want more than this, simply ignore the OK / Not OK box and look at the values.

Here is the link:

NB, there is also a tyre size calc on sheet 2.

Any man who makes spreadsheets up deserves credit- amazing!

Thank you!

Nice 👍 Been contemplating black wheels on my grey too but undecided... 🤔
