Have had a z4 and a lupo gti (gf's) for some time, and time has come to get something with a bit more load space (selling lupo). Gf and I swap cars regularly and will be looking to get something quick, fun, for around £15k. At mo R32 is top of list - but with an mpg of 26, and tax band g, its potentially a bit expensive to run...

Was thinking I can't be only person with this dilema - wondered what other peoples more practical car was?/suggestion

£15k - Facelift Cooper S I'm terribly impressed with my daughters. Quick, stylish and plenty of luggage space if you drop the back seats

Wife has the practical car- an ST220 Mondeo estate  well we needed something to take the dogs out in.

X5 4.8i. An awesome vehicle. Can't wait for the X5M to come out, I have a few Cayenne friends to beat.

Subaru Impreza RS2.5, 5 speed manual, nothing special, but it gets me to the ski slopes and back country hiking without worry. We will give this car to my daughter when she finishes college this year and I may replace it with an older E46 325Xi and a good set of snow tires. Wife drives an X3 and it usually gets the nod for long trips, but we have traveled with the Z4 and I really like it. Have to slim down the luggage though.

My wife really loves her X3 and hates to let me drive it, all of her important junk is in it, That may change though if she gets a Mini Cooper (she's been salivating over it for some time now), in that case the X3 will become my practical second car.

How about a Subaru Forrester STi... About as quick as the scooby, but without the Chav image and about as practical as a swiss army knife with a spork!

Currently, my 2nd car is my e34 M5, but space restraints means it's being sold.

Oh dear. How much do you want for it?

I want £9,999.99 for it, but I'll take £3,500 in this climate  or £3,499.99 to you.

Mine's practical but I wouldn't call it quick. As I once told someone, it doesn't so much speed up as gradually go less slow. It's a Smart ForTwo:

epbrown, do US dealers sell the Smart or did you import it yourself? Haven't seen one on the streets yet over there?

The Smart has been for sale in the US for over a year, since the 451 came out. There's currently a 6-month waiting list to buy one. There were 24,000 sold here in 2008. Unfortunately, we don't get the turbo models, and our Brabus version comes with the appearance and suspension mods, but not the engine. Still, it makes a nice commuter and I like saving my M Coupe from abuse.

Cool! More Smarts would help you guys over the pond reduce dependence on imported gas, although I suspect it'll take some time before they're socially acceptable cars for heterosexuals in some of the less densely populated states. On a serious note, the Smart is probably more environmentally friendly than most hybrids and electrical cars, while being more fun. Most people forget that the weight is more important for emissions than the choice of engine. -Not that I buy cars based on emissions alone!

I save my Z from abuse by walking to work. Saves me the hassle of paying for parking as well :D Thinking of getting a Vespa though!

I've got 330i saloon for the boring every day stuff, it's nice enough that I don't mind not using the zed whilst being plain and unassuming
