In the UK, as the home of the industrial revolution, with the likes of Brunel et al, it seems you can be qualified to repair a domestic boiler and that's qualification enough to be called engineer. 1/ Chartered Surveyor
2/ Mainly deal with commercial property i.e. retail,office, industrial. Selling, leasing, acquisitions, rent reviews, lease renewals, etc.
3/ Run my own business, flexibility, able to surf z4 forum without some IT dept blocking me
4/ Recession put a few of my clients out of business and there is a long way to go before we get back to 2007 levels/ lots of red tape running a small business/ surfing z4 forum too much :lol:
5/ Changing lots of nappies as have a 15 month old son.

1 - Dentist
2 - Hunching over an overly expensive chair, drilling, filling, sectioning, extracting and replacing teeth! Managing nervous, conscious people while still having to sell a product that happens to fall into healthcare.
3 - genuinely enjoy working with the public (most of the time)! I like science, but couldn't sit solely in front of a chair. I'm not so good at being told what to do, so here I'm mainly my own boss unless a patient dialects something off google at me and expects me to follow their advice ;-) Most days enjoy micro engineering, logic and common sense and I get to use my hands all day.
4 - litigation is becoming a minefield, with a huge chunk of time being spent crossing and dotting notes. I'm also not a fan of the Monday morning patient, new to the practice who walks in expressing how they hate you before you've even spoken to them. Oh, also people are often pretty rude in the surgery, and seriously undervalue what they think they should pay! (I work in the NHS ! )

Now I know why I read all the bull , engineers pmsl the kewl one though is the big boat 
1.Automotive, Comercial ,Industrial Mechanic (anything that moves with IC engines)
2. Look after a fleet for a large manufacture . Involves 40ton Tractor units 15m tri axel trailers , 12 ton rigid trucks , company cars from modeos -tri turbo bmws , forklifts . Responsible to make sure everything ticks .There are only 2 of us looking after 100 of a fleet .
3. Well paid as a lot going on
Love spending large amounts of someone else's money
May as well be self employed as have massive freedom
4. Having to get up at 6am
Hate sandwiches for lunch
Having to finish at 3.30pm on a Friday
5. Work at home in the evenings on premium brand German cars .

Not sure who wins here, I dont have a team (1400 kids dont count) and I dont drink tea or coffee so refuse to make it for others.apw67 said:I thought I detailed that I make the tea and wipe my teams backsides from time to time. Planning and overseeing building work/renovation, lease management, allocating and managing space within buildings, managing building maintenance activities, managing cleaning contracts, organising security and general administrative services, supervising multi-disciplinary teams including maintenance, grounds and custodial workers, setting up and managing partnership agreements with third party companies, writing and monitoring SLA’s, carrying out risk assessments including fire risk assessments, carrying out safety reviews, health and safety training, occasional hands on maintenance work on large or complex jobs I muck in and work with the guys.

a, Lots of variety no two days ever the same,
b, Good line manager who gives me total autonomy but is there for support if needed,
c, Not completely office based a lot of time spent on different sites/buildings (couldn’t cope sitting in an office all day every day, even though I have my own office)
4) 3 Bad points
a, To many pointless meetings
b, Very reliant on other people such as contractors or other internal departments who don’t have the same dedication or commitment. I spend a lot of time chasing people.
c, Continual Government cutbacks not allowing adequate budgets to properly maintain building maintenance standards
5) Any second job/business?
Until 12 months ago worked as a freelance fully qualified (NEBOSH) and accredited with IOSH (Institute of Occupational Health) and CIEH (Chartered Institute of Environmental Health) health and safety Trainer/Consultant as well as working full time, had days off on flexi or worked in evenings or weekends or took leave, packed it in because it got more and more difficult to juggle between a full time job and doing freelance work, often wonder if I should have done the freelance work full time and packed my job in instead.

2 - Terminal leave from the Naval Service til Apr 15. I have fixed sophisticated weapon systems, managed a department of weapon engineers, project managed comprehensive refits, and conducted maritime security operations. Most recently an Operating Safety Manager for Navy Command HQ.
3a - I don't have to work til Apr.
3b - Runs ashore with some of the best people I've ever had the pleasure to know.
3c - Drugs busting & jumping out of helicopters.
4a - Crazy hours at times.
4b - 7 month deployments.
4c - Not having the resource to do the job as I wish.
5 - Nil. I intend to carry on with professional engineering when I leave the Service, and then head into one of the following:
Property renovation (I'm gaining sparky qualifications next year, and already have experience with my own properties. A combination of hands on / management of tradesmen. I am also a competent plumber and installer of boilers / central heating systems.
Vehicle restoration.
4x4 exploration.
