Whats with UK insurance not letting you drive any vehicle!

Over the last few years it's getting harder to find insurance companies that will insure you to drive Third Party on any other vehicle, although most still do 'drive any car' (although i think this is being faised out).

I've noticed the last time I renewed, my cover stated 'any car' rather than vehicle. When I quized them it is indead specifically cars only!

I almost understand the 'not comercial stuff', but not even a camper van, and i wonder how they regard SUV/4X4's?

This isn't just one insurer I've quized either, it's got to be about 10 or so!

I don't understand, you can borrow a £100'000 ferrari (yeah, like someone would actually lend you one :poke: ) but not a £500 van?

Right, rant over, any thoughts and opinions welcome, and if you know any companies that will isure 'any vehicle' let me know.

P.S. this has only really become an issue as driving a Z4 as your daily car you can't really fit anything in it, and i'm always needing to borrow something else to pick up stuff.

If you have cover for cars then that will cover an SUV/4x4 I would imagine.

I think all insurers will add this as a feature to the policy, especially as you get older. Usually it is excluded for younger drivers to stop them borrowing their parents possibly much more powerful car etc.

Best to phone around plenty of insurers and just ask :)

Do you run your own business at all? Any chance to set up a business policy for more open cover?

Ever since ive had my own insurance ive been able to drive any other "vehicle" 3rd party
Since i got the zed and insurance on it - it was made clear to me that I was only allowed to drive it and nothing else! Bizzare. If i did, my premium almost doubled as it would have to go with a different underwriter - and this was via Adrian Flux!

That is probably because Adrian Flux underwriters don't cater for certain things like that. Not many people need it, so their underwriters specialise in single cars only. Go off their specialisation and they are likely not competitive.

Ie, my previous insurer was cheaper than anyone else, but on the Z4 they were almost double everyone else, and while my last insurer wanted £100 more to add my partner, my current one took £100 off!

Same insurer varying option comparisons are not indicative of much except ending up falling foul of their specialisations. Any changes like 'any vehicle' cover etc, really needs a full re-search through insurers to find those offering competitive cover!

I have considered 'buisness/trade cover', I do change my cars quite often, but think it is a bit pricey, plus i'd have to think of a legitimate reason to be hopping in and out of other cars!

Most insurance still allows me to drive other cars, it would just be usefull to have the any vehicle, so that you can hop in a small van to pick up something (most things) that doesn't fit in the zed.

Personally i'd be prepared to pay a good couple of hundred more to have drive any 'vehicle' (as apposed to car), but insurance's arn't even offering it as an extra premium. I've run out of companies to phone!

:headbang:

Also seems that most insurance say for 'emergency' only. I can understand the restrictions as a yong driver, but at the end of the day you're only insured 3rd party, so the value of a car is irrelivent, just the likleyhood of doing more damage to someone else i guess, but when you're already isuring a 3.0l sports car seems a bit pointless.

:tumbleweed:

Best bet could be to use people like dayinsure.com if you only need short term cover, could work out cheaper than adding 100's to your policy.....

Ive used them when ive borrowed nice cars and wanted them covered fully comp...

I also use them if im selling a car and people want a test drive, they can go online, pay £10 or so and I know it's covered if they ding it!

Tbh insurance in general is a joke...
My best quote was just over 5000..yes five thousand...
Ahhh the joys of being 19
But im sure it will be well worth it!
Btw is there anyone else at the "barely out of puberty" age on the forum??

How on earth can you afford 5k for insurance? Or are you fronting on your parents' names?

Some of us are pretty young. I'm only 23 (2 years NCB, teacher, B post code, no points/crashes, mum as named driver) and my insurance is £1,000 for a 3litre 03 roadster. I think Lucy's a bit younger than me, but hers won't be massive as she's got ovaries.

Even a year or two's NCB at your age will only go so far. You really need to get to 21 so you're out of the 17-20 age bracket, the privilege for being in which is a huge premium on your... premium. :P

Bloody hell :o

I'm 21 and paying £1,200 (protected - 4 years NCB) on a 2006 2.0 Sport Roadster, which I didnt thought was bad...

My previous insurer (Bell) allowed a "Driving Other Cars" extention on the policy for just £30 extra a year which was a bargain considering my age at the time as no other insurers seemed to allow this. Now it's gone up to £130 ish for the option, but they refuse to give me a policy under a Z4 because of my age :(

£1,200 seems a bit high, unless that year began before you turned 21. If you've taken it out since your birthday then I feel you're not getting value for money there at all.

The trouble is the apparent "Sport" extra - even though it's only minor cosmetic the insurers seem to want double then that of one without. I looked everywhere and this was the cheapest I could get it.

:dance2: Yup!

21years old - BMW Z4 2.5i - paying 119 pounds per month, you do the maths, because it makes me sick! I've only being driving for 4 years and I've spent over 7K on insurance... Makes me sick!

Ahhh good to see some other people are younger too :D
Yeah guess i had to expect a premium like that at my age...
Plus cos im forces i think some companies see me as higher risk?! Yeah cos i ll take my car to afghanistan with me...yeahh course..
But still....smokers spend about half that on fags a year don't they? So it's worth it :D almost...

Would be great if they brought in the European system of insurance over here. Cars are insured in Europe, not people (as it should be). It all works on discount levels. You start with 0% and work your way up every year so it is self funding.

It did mean that I could drive my parents cars as soon as I was 18 though without having to get insurance for it. If I had an accident, it would cost my parents a loss of 20% no claims, that is all.

Yep 21 here, although at the time i got my Z4 last year i was only 20, with 1 year ncb and had my licence less than 2 years. I'm the policy holder, and put my Dad as a named driver (even though he's never drove it in the year i've had it  ) £1326 with Diamond on a 2008 3.0si Coupe. :D

5k :o :o :o

I had that option when i went with bell, good to have. I haven't got it now though which is annoying when i need to use something with a big boot.

I'm 23, 1300 on a 3.0.
