What's this, please?

On my E89 28i there is a small plastic plate low down on the right hand bumper, below the headlight washer flap, just to the left of the reg. number plate. Or at least there was - it has disappeared, fell out or knocked out. I don't know what it covers - can anyone tell me? Is it important to get it replaced?
 
Thanks, smartbear! Of course it is - I just couldn't understand why there was no towing hook. But I now know the hook is in the toolkit, and needs screwing in. Amazing what you can find in the instruction booklet!
 
Probably find some scrote nicked it. I'm sure thats what happen to mine on my one series.

I've now used a cable tie as a fail safe. If it goes missing its been nicked for sure.
