What's this in my door ?

Number5

Elite
 Bristol M4/M5
I've noticed a rattle in my door over the last couple of weeks. It sounded like something loose in the door pocket, but the door pocket was empty !

I took the door panel off and found this rattling about in the bottom of the door. I've looked on the Real OEM site and cannot see it anything like it, especially listing a spring. Everything in the door ( Catch, windows, locking, etc) all works fine still.

What is it ? Where did it come from ? (Key is only there for scale, before you jokers start !)

Is that not part 8 of real OEM?

Can you still open the door with the key in the lock?

I have just had they same thing, my drivers side window no longer goes down. It is part of the window regulator apparently. You may also have a black tube the sticks out off. My cable was also rusted and was found in half at the bottom of the inside of the door.
New part for me is 135 squid

Part number 8 looks like the door lock barrel unless this come from the inner workings of it...

Yes, i was thinking of the inner working. That is why I asked if he could still open the door with the key.

Looks like someone above had a better idea though

No, Def not part 8 (the Key barrel).
Doors still lock/unlock with key or remote, Windows still glide up and down nicely, mirrors still move on request.
No malfunctions at all.

Any more suggestions anyone, or more info on the Window regulator Tom ?

Perhaps the previous owner fixed the window and left that bit in the door not realising it was there, and now it's come free from where it was wedged.

Quite possibly. I had a regulator replaced in a Z3 years ago. Some months later, I had the doorcasing off to do some wiring and found two screwdrivers and a prying tool. - thanks bmw. :?

I currently have my door card hanging off so I'll post a picture when I'm home in about 2 hours. Hope it helps you.
Good luck with your issue

Cheers,
The door card/panel was the easy bit to remove, but it looked like the liner had never been touched and was a bugger to un-peel.

I believe these items are often referred to as pimlicos and they belong in the rear left hand corner of your man drawer in the kitchen (or utility rm if you are middle class). You must always keep it safely there in the dark corner of the drawer on the off chance that one day you discover just what it is and in case there is even a chance in a million that it will be of some use in the future.

This describes the entire contents of my garage, shed and utility room cupboards !

I'm now wondering if its part No 7 (as circled in red) and possibly is an old part from a previous repair.

I'll have to open the door up again to check if the new one is all in place, but I would assume it must be or I'd have a problem.

The circled area should home the black cable for the window regulator. That plastic piece goes in there I think. Although may be wrong as your windows/doors are all fine.
(The silver backing is sound deadening, yours may look slightly different)

Thanks for your help Tom,
Thats looks about right, for size and fitting. I'm going to have to open mine up again and see if there's a new one in there... Damn !

What role does the spring and catch play ?

To be honest I am in no way an expert. But it looks like the spring will pull it under tension in a similar way as a bycycle brake.
It is being fitted tomorrow, not by me.

I'm sure that item is part of the window regulator/cable arrangement. Yours has no doubt been replaced as the original broke leaving that bit behind. I have changed a couple of regulators in the past on other cars, actually one was a BMW E46 and the regulator cable set up had those springs. I think they there to offer a cushion effect when the window is in operation and at extremities. :?

Thanks all for your help today Chaps.

The Zeds gone away now for a couple of weeks, so I'll check it out next time it emerges from it's nest.

I'd pretty sure that's part of the window regulator as others have said.
Looks like whoever replaced it left that bit behind in the door.
I might have a photo when I did mine, I'll check tomorrow.
