What's the Z4 like in the snow?

The road out of our industrial units were a little greasy tonight and the back end was slithering about without much provacation..

This was the road into our village last year.... The year before was slightly worse but never managed to get a picture of it..

Note the 40mph sign...I would estimate that is 7ft up the pole..

The M is better than non-M but still pretty crap on summer tyres.

Ground clearance was my only issue. Once you're on the right tyres it makes grip less of an issue.

if you think about it logically then the zed on runflats should work pretty well . just let them down to increase traction & away you go ? :?

That theory works well for sand but not snow

With winter tyres mine was fine last year, in fact I remember being on the M25 when the first snow fell, all the other cars were sliding all over while I was doing 70mph in a straight line! I think most cars are cr*p in the snow unless you have winter tyres. If you are looking for a recommendation, I have been very happy with my Marangoni Meteo Winter Tyres, good in the snow, great in the wet! The handling and ride in my Zed is so much better with those tyres on compared to my summer tyres - I can't wait to get them on again!

Rather than buy a set of wheels and tyres for the Zed I bought an old Honda Civic instead - I use it all-year round as a daily hack and it's great in the (very rare) days we get proper snowfall in this country.

Trouble is winter tyres are only any good in temps below 7c. In our UK winter (well in England anyway) there are many days when the temperature exceeds that so I thought the case for them was highly marginal. In Scotland or the NE of England I recognise that things may be different though.

They work in all temps and work very well in warm & wet conditions, it's just that they're designed specifically to remain flexible below 7C. The only downside is the increased wear in warmer temps (as you're going faster and they overheat more quickly) and the noise.

Actually, speaking of noise, it's awful in any Zed when there's snow. The ABS fighting to keep you from being maimed or killed sounds awful. Feels rubbish too on the brake pedal as it judders away.
