What's the book value of a 150k mile Z4MC...

That will have been my engineer doing one of his 2 test drive laps when we went to the Ring, as he has fully comp insurance for there due to doing some manufacturer/independent set-up & testing.

Diff change has been authorised, with a 30% contribution from me - which is more than I'd want to pay, but understand it's classed as 'half worn' from the insurer's point of view

Only bit I need changing now is the gearbox and I'll have had everything changed in my ownership :P

Hopefully this will be the end of a drawn out claims process and I'll get back to enjoying the car after 8 months :driving:

I can now also start thinking about getting the front-end respray and bucket seats I've been promising myself.

Sounds like this long drawn out saga is finally reaching its end - must feel good Tony

You will love having it back on the road :driving:

Hopefully this will be the end of the road as far as quibbling with insurance claims handlers and engineers, but as it's my first 'at fault' claim, I really thought it would be simple as there was no 3rd party to cloud the issue.

So much for 'specialist' insurers who 'understand enthusiast owners' and 'modified cars' as the car was sent to a repairer who didn't even recognise the Bilstein name and had no in-house facilities to check the chassis was straight. Then the insurer couldn't understand why the parts were so expensive for my car - DUH! that's why you're charging such a premium!

Ultimately, the engineer was great and understood the concerns of both me and my specialist, and the claims handler was professional & courteous - even if a bit useless in actually understanding why I was pissed off with little things like a 'noisy diff' and 'stiff gearbox' and 'non-matching tyre' and 'loose bodywork'.

The car won't become a garage queen, but will also not become the daily driver again. It will go onto a classic/limited mileage/agreed value policy, which should reduce the premium somewhat. Car will due a few trackdays and Ring trips a year, along with the National meet and a couple of Welsh weekends I organise for my M5-forum buddies.

I can then use my 'full 10 years+ protected NCB' (despite the 1 claim) on the beast that is the Alfa 147 JTD 115bhp 8v Lusso in Gabbiano Blue - might even chip it for an extra 45bhp and get the 130,000 mile old front suspension replaced.

Looks like I will be back on the road just in time for an Autumn trip to the 'Ring to break it back in.

Finally got the news that the diff has arrived from Germany, after a bit of an argument about price rises (ordered in July before the price rise, but not paid for until it arrived in August - and dealer wanted to charge August price of 20% more).

Diff will now be fitted sometime in September when my and my spanner monkey's calendars coincide.

Will also take the opportunity to get some damaged trim replaced and the alignment adjusted to my fast-road preference.

If I'd known it would take this long to get some things sorted, I would have put the car in for a respray in the meantime, but kept being told everything was 'almost ready'. Maybe use autumn/winter to finish things off.

Fingers crossed this is the last leg of the journey Tony!
As far as the insurance company are concerned, then definitely.

But I keep thinking of things I can do to it now that it won't be my daily driver - bucket seats, velocity stacks, louder exhaust, supercharger, etc.

Will all that genuinely add to your experience and enjoyment of the car?

Well, the bucket seats will definitely make my track days more enjoyable as I won't have to try and hold myself in the seat every corner. They're about the only thing on my list that are definite - plus the Alcon calipers I'm waiting to fit.

I've been promising myself a supercharger for about 5 years, but no-one would insure me for the 25,000 miles, track days, Euro cover, business use (well, not for less than £5k a year). Unfortunately the exchange rate for the € or $ means it's also much more expensive than it was 5 years ago.

If I go down the velocity stacks route then I wouldn't do the supercharger of course - so it's an either/or scenario - depends whether I want performance over noise.

Buy yourself a cheap run around and build the z4m supercharged beast!

I have the cheap runaround (a Z4M-worrying Alfa 147 JTD with 115bhp), so the Z4 will be my 2nd car, and thus will only be doing <5000 miles a year.

This is the reason I'm considering the changes, as it wouldn't be wise (or insurable) on the 25,000 mile, business use policy that I have now.

Keep the Alfa mate! You had my MC worried on the National! Glad to hear you've got this all sorted now.

I'm slower in the Z4 than the Alfa, as in the Alfa I don't slow down for potholes/speedbumps/chippings - and the Alfa is much more compliant through rough corners so I can carry more speed.

Plus it's only £1000 if I write it off :P
