Has anyone opened up a factory muffler (back box) and looled inside? I'm curious why these are 1. so heavy and 2. if they use a baffle or packing design?

Inc...Interesting inquiry...just for yucks, the pic below is a cutaway of a BMW MINI Exhaust. I know that they are completely different makes & models, but hey!, for its operation & function, the internals should be somewhat similar to all other BMW muffler units...
BTW, I still have my OEM exhaust. However, I do not plan on selling it. Who knows, I may need it someday... :wink:
1st, thanks for the post. Wow, I had no idea that there was so much stuffed into these things, it certainly explains the weight. Intriguing to follow the flow path. At first I thought the additional can (ahead of the tailpipe can) was a secondary cat, but from checking out the parts diagram, it appears to be primarily for sound modulation as the cat is in the exhaust manifold.
Still looking for an oe muffler for an educational project. Thanks again for the info.
