Whats happened to this?

Any idea whats happened to what looks like pipe insulation at the rear of the engine on my z4coupe?

Is it heat that has damaged this? Or have for some reason the mice taken a liking to this bit of the car and started eating it.

I think its a pipe connecting the oil seperator to the engine block, its something i will replace over time. Assume its not critical / or is it something that will leave me stuck somewhere when i least expect it?

To be heat damage, the heat source would have to be the bonnet, not likely. So it must be rodent damage. Filthy, annoying fittle luckers. The pipe carries crankcase gasses and aersolised oil to the oil separator. I can only guess the purpose of the insulation is due to the separator working better with hot oil aerosols, otherwise the oil can condense in the pipe before it gets to the separator. I don't see how this would be a big problem, the condensed oil would either drain to the head or the separator. Big deal?

I can't imagine this would cause you to be stranded. A stop gap measure until you get around to replacing the pipe would be to replace the lost insulation with spray on polyurethane foam insulation. You can carve it with a serrated knife once it's hardened, then paint it black. You might decide this is good enough and put off replacement indefinitely.
 
That's either heat, or chemical damage. Rodents would have eaten at all sorts to see what they fancied.

That engine bay looks sparkly clean, have you sprayed a chemical in there that might have eaten away at the foam insulation?
 
That's not a chemical burn. Mice like foam, we have similar stuff in our loft with identical marks. Do you live in the country? Or the suburbs?
 
Yeah looks like rodent damage. Perhaps set some deterrents near where your car is parked? You can buy audio deterrents that emit a high pitched noise (that humans can't hear), that keep the little feckers away :thumbsup:

They didn't seem to help me, either I was fooled by a unit that didn't really do anything, or my mice are as hard of hearing high pitches as I am. Old skool spring traps work best for me, though a bit unpleasant to empty. Then you know for sure they are good and dead.

in the area & the rodents won't be interested in your foamy rubber bits + you don't have to deal with the after death bits :)

Have ordered a new pipe today, not sure if this damage happened during my ownership or before (only had the car a few months), i think i would have noticed but can't be sure.
Car usually sits in the garage and i already have one of those sonic mouse plug in's. But will put some traps, poison stuff around in anycase. Car currently sitting on the drive this week as have a load of junk in the garage to get rid off, if they are in the garage hopefully they won't make the trip down the drive to eat any more bits of the car!

+1 - I am s**t scared of normal spiders let alone one of them bad boys!
