What's happened to my steering wheel?

Interesting this one .. lets see how he gets on with the dealer

I don't suppose for one minute they will admit to it

Given how clean the car is and the fact they didn't wash their hands at the outset and offered to refinish it, I would think they've possibly realised it has been them.

It's not a case of my car is better than your car. It's educating yourself and others that just because you don't have something in your car, it doesn't mean it doesn't exsist and that others have paid a 'premium' and it's not a cheap option to add this to their car.

You can see the stiching on top of instrument panel in the steering wheel picture which further confirms extended leather.

I stand corrected, your car is apparently slightly better than mine . Next time I buy a car (or when the finance ends I should say) I'll definitely not overlook these interior upgrades.
Mine also has the dash stitching, but it's still leather effect vinyl — it soaks up conditioning milk like crazy.

It's six years old now. The wheel was somewhat shiny but not worn, it didn't have this patchy finish so something has happened to it while in their care. If they refinish it and it's fine then I'm happy with that. If not the yeah of course I'd push them to replace it.

I'd not thought to check elsewhere, I'm heading to the driveway...

Here's what it looks like;

Looks like a mark but it seems like its the surface that's been removed.

I noticed today that my steering wheel looks like this, the car has only done 7000 miles so can't be classed a wear and tear.

Not the best picture as it dark outside.

It's back... And I'm not happy with the 'repair'. They've done half the wheel so it's texture and look is different. They've missed a damaged section etc.

Waiting game to see what they propose next. I know what I want.

If they give you any grief or the run around stop wasting your time with them in person. You're well within your rights to ask for a replacement after you've given the opportunity to repair. Up to you if you want to let them have another go but start putting it in writing. If still no joy then have a replacement fitted at BMW and send them the bill, if they don't cough up head to court!

I appreciate your thoughts but I'm not about to go through the stress of the legal system over a mark on a steering wheel. I have far more important things to worry about. I will persist in a repair that I'm happy with or a replacement wheel and I feel confident I will get an outcome that I'm happy with, without resorting to a drawn out costly legal process. As for putting it in writing, I will take that advice for sure.

The small claims system is pretty easy, cheap (£25 up to £300, £35 up to £500) and stress free, just a bit of a waiting game. I've used it quite a few times when I've got no joy with a business - you can recoup additional costs or expenses too and that ramps up the claim. As for a replacement wheel you're talking at least a couple of hundred pounds which the loss of, through no fault of my own, would cause much more stress! Hope they roll over for you but if they don't happy to help you with the process if you want to go that way

Any more developments re the wheel?

A polite but firm letter to the top man is the way forward, then go down the small claims route.
You will have demonstrated that you've given them ample opportunity to correct things.

Current status, the wheel was returned repaired, I wasn't happy with it and negotiated my position. I was offered a used wheel or further repair attempts. I continued to assert my position. They conceded to a new wheel, which was fitted today, but I've not seen it as they damaged the lower silver trim on the wheel which is being replaced tomorrow before I get the car back.

Here's hoping it's a good result and nothing further needs chasing.

Now they damage the silver trim... for gods sake!! :headbang:

Indeed. The person handling the issue for me was livid and embarrassed to tell me what had happened. So long as it's fixed it's a non issue to me.
