What's engine MIL?

Hi everyone. Looking for advice. I'm am about to purchase a SDrive 23i M and looking at the MOT vehicle history, it very recently showed up as
"Engine MIL inoperative"
When i test drove it it came on again and the garage says he will sort it out. What is it & can this be serious / expensive?

Sounds like the check engine light wasn't working during the mot.

I'd definitely be wanting to know what caused it to come on, and what he did to 'sort it out'.

Personally I’d choose a car that didn’t have any issues, there’s plenty out there.

The engine malfunction indicator lamp (MIL) should illuminate when the ignition key is turned then go out when the engine is running. If it doesn't light up initially or fails to go out then thats an MOT fail.
If it doesn't light up initially then someone might have removed the bulb to con an unsuspecting buyer? Or it might just have blown?
