I didn't have the space but I bought a 10x10 metal shed. And the compressor was 160 off ebay.
It's mainly patience that is required. Everything else you learn through research and practice like anything else.

I may be able to help out with that then at some time when I'm a bit less busy! You're going to need to learn how to flat and polish as well! Thats a big part of it too.

what are you wanting to experiment on? Your bumper?Main problem is, is that anything that needs filler/ primer needs to be done over 2 days. Need to allow the primer to properly harden so would have to come down twice lol.

Question 1: I was given the compressor by a mate, think it's an OK one, is there a minimum size I need to be able to paint something due to maintaining pressure?
Question 2: Gun recommendation? Same with somewhere to get paint/primer/lacquer/thinners (if I need some)?
Question 3: You say about flat and polishing, this is where I've ALWAYS had issues before. My car, like most of my past cars is metallic, when you're spraying you get a nice metallic fleck, right? But then, if you flat and polish the paint up to give it a nice finish, you lose an awful lot of that metallic? Or am I doing it wrong?
Also, again, if you polish it up after paint, does that leave nothing for the lacquer to adhere to?
My process is normally:
Sand
Dusting of primer to reveal imperfections
Sand more, filler if necessary
Sand (if filler applied)
Primer x 3 coats
Sand down if necessary
Paint x 3 coats
This is where I get lost, do I now flat this paint down, if so with what grade? Do I polish it back up?
Then lacquer x2 normally?
Sorry to write you a small essay, but you look to get a very good finish.
Sorry to confuse re. The flatting at polishing. What I mean is you flat and polish the clear after its dry.
So if you're painting a wing for example, if there are any dents. Sand down with 80 grit, apply body filler. Rub down with 80-180 until you think it's right. Smooth off with 320 (requires less primer) scotch whole panel or 800wet sand. Prime repair with 3 ish coats of preferably 2k primer.
spray a light mist of matt black on to the primer. When you run the primer down you sand until the black is gone. It shows any imperfections so you sand til they're gone.
Wipe the panel down.
Panel wipe to degrease.
mix basecoat (colour) in gun (50/50 with 2k thinners)
Tack of the panel with a tack cloth while blowing air over the panel.
apply basecoat it light even coats. Can't give a number on coats as it depends on the paint. Just apply until covered then maybe one more to make sure. Allow 10 mins between coats or you can see its visibly dry.
After final coat is dry mix clear. (2k clear with hardener and thinners)
Tack of panel very lightly!
Apply a light to medium coat.
10-15 mins later apply a full coat aiming for a good shine but not perfect. 2k clear flows out so goes smoother over a few mins.
allow another 15 mins then repeat the last coat.
Those small 24 litre compressors can do a fair bit.
my dad painted the passenger side wing door and rear door with one the other day. Used a mini hvlp gun that cost a tenner.

Flatting and polishing is the final stage. The main purpose is to get rid of dust and other crap that landed in the wet paint. So you'll need some 2000 and 3000 wet and dry paper. I use it with a meguars rubber sanding block. You wet sand the whole panel until all imperfections are gone. You also reduce orange peel so be concious of adjacent panels as you want the orange peel to match. Once your finished with the 2000 repeat with 3000. Dry off and use a machine polisher with a cutting compound and cutting pad. Then refine with a medium pad and compound. A third stage might be necessary but find it isn't usually. I use 3m fast cut plus, the 3m extrafine, then 3m ultrafina all with their colour coded pads.

You can get the primer and clear online. My last clear kit was off ebay I'll get you a link.
when you buy a primer or clear kit. They come with hardener. The ratios maybe different to each other but still easy to understand. The clear is usually 2-1. So say you put 100ml of clear into a cup, you put in 50ml of hardener. Then thinners is between 10-30% of your mixed clear (150 ml)
The thinne doesn't usually come with the kit though but you just buy a seperate litre (bare in mind your basecoat colour uses a lot with the mix being 50/50) so may be better off buying a 5l can. You use the same thinner with your primer basecoat and clear.
