I went to the supermarket yesterday. It was almost completely empty in the parking lot, so I parked far away from any other cars. I went into the store and bought everything I needed. On my way out I see that another car has parked next to mine. From far away I see the door open, and very clearly see that the guy stepping out of the car opens his door straight into my car. :x

He clearly does't care, closes his door and walks towards the supermarket. I meet him halfway to the car and say:
- Wasn't that unnecessary, couldn't you have been more careful when you open your door?
- What do you mean?
- I clearly saw that you hit your car door against my car, couldn't you have been more careful?
- Oh, sorry, but no harm done, he says and walks away.

That really pissed me off, and when I get to the car, of course there is a small mark. His door just hit the wheel arch, and a small piece of paint chipped off! :headbang:

Thinking about this situation last night, I was wondering how you guys would have reacted and what you would have said to him?!
 
Depends on how big he was!
Unfortunately there are many people who don't care as much about cars as we do, and we've gonna have to live with that.
No doubt we annoy nature lovers, ramblers, cyclists etc. as we thrash around the countryside making 'too much noise', 'driving too fast' etc.
If no-one's injured 'live and let live' - but I may be in the minority. :wink:
 
Did you get his details? Would it not be worth while contacting his insurance company to get him to repair it? Or is the insurance system in Norway as unhelpful as it can be here?
 
first, smash the shopping trolley into his rear light, smashing the lens
second, scrape the trolley all down the side of his car

i will give it more thought, sure i can think of other things
 
No point in taking insurance details, the mark is so little, it wouldn't be worth it. It is just the princple of the thing. :x

I should have written this post on my phone just as it happened and waited for all members advice on how to handle it. Wish I had thought of this. :D
His car was a worn-down old car, perhaps that is why he showed my car so little respect.

I think I did take the "live and let live" path, since I did not make a huge thing of it. But it annoys me soooo much.
 
This brings to mind an incident many years ago when I owned a 5 series. We hadn't had it long and although a few years old it was pristine and we loved it.

We went shopping and I purposely parked in the last proper parking space, as close to the edge as possible to give plenty of room to the only other car that would be next to me......so I thought.

We got back to find the most rusty, beaten-up Austin Maestro (no way it had an MOT) illegally parked a foot away from our car - with a dent and a piece of paint the size of a 5p coin missing from our door level with it's door next to it. I could have cried with the unjustness and frustration of it all.

I contemplated all the revengeful things above and more, but couldn't find anything to damage on the car that wasn't broken already, so we drove home in silence.

In retrospect, I wish I'd just let all his tyres down - what an idea! That would give slobs like these plenty of grief without resorting any permanent damage.

Some people just can't stand anyone else having something nice. Low Lives :headbang:
 
well I have a telescopic metal stick in the car always ready so I would give him 2 dings as a return - in case he would be stronger then me. If he was some dwarf I would kick his ass the instant I saw it happen. :thumbsdown:
 
I like the idea of letting the tires down but today with all of the video surveillance cameras I would likely call the police and get a police report if there was a corresponding mark on his car. In the end on this side of the pond your car would be fixed at the expense of his insurance company. I once filed such a claim and in the end the minor repair and rental car were paid in full. The rental car was more than the repair.
 
The car in question, would NOT be leaving the car park in anything resembling the condition it came in, in.

And, if I actually saw someone doing the dinging, they would be getting such an effing earful and persuading that they need to pay for the damage they caused.

You damage someone's property, you pay for it........isn't that just common courtesy.
 
I would have confronted him just as you did. And then probably key his car after :lol:
 
Difficult to know what to do in that situation.

Saying that, the only time I have had a car damaged in a car park was when i returned to my then Eunos Roadster to find a dent accompanied with a scuff of yellow paint with the car parked (badly) next to me being a yellow Cinqucento with a scuff of black paint on its front bumper. Honestly, the arrogance of blatently hitting a car and then leaving the car parked in the next bay totally lost me.

My options were:-

a - wait for the owner to come back making me late for a meeting and probably getting nowhere
b - leave a card under the windscreen in the vein hope of a reply to fix said scratch
c- treat it as one of those incidents and move on.

I opted for d and left a decent size 9 dent in the drivers door.
 
I would of either made him pay for it or if he wasn't willing to take his insurance details and get them to fix it.
 
The more you try avoid car damage, the more you leave your self open to it.

Logic suggests otherwise, but it's true, from years of experience worrying about cars. The more you go out of your way, the more in harms way they seem to end up!

I would have taken down the plate rang the insurance and reported it as a hit and run as if you hadnt approached him that would be what it is. After hitting your car and leaving a mark he should have left his details. Someone did something similar to my compact E36 years back scuffed the bumper... I caught them writing a note and leaving it on my windscreen saying 'sorry i bumped you' to make it look like to passers by he was leaving his details.

He didnt say a word when i started walking fast up to my car to see what was going on he got in his car and drove off, I managed to get his plate and tracked him through the insurance. They were willing to take it further and claim for a repsray but the damage turned out to t cut out so I didnt go after him. These days I just think of it as if I budget a few hundred in every couple of years for respray a panel then all is good, its not worth worrying over.... now the roof is a different matter! I didnt know this but aparently if the rear window is broken you need a new roof! I currently have a key mark down the passenger side and a small key mark on the door which bmw are sorting for £350 the problem with driving a decent car I guess there are too many assholes about.
 
I've stopped worryign about it now. Its all heartache and nothing else. Yes u can scratch their car, what if someone caught u doing it or cctv captured that- u r f***ed. U can always put a note on the other person's windscreen, not much otherwise. or else just look around, open your door so hard that it dents his car. still not worth it in my opinion. I've given up on these A***holes. One of those things.
