If you don't want RDW, what about a 3 series XI?
4wd is the safest form of traction.
For the fixing things part: I think engines which are transverse mounted are maybe harder to work on. Especially if you have turbo trouble!
Inline mounted engines are only difficult in that a car lift is convenient. Especially with clutch work.
I don't know how prices are in the UK, but what about an Alfa romeo 159? Those cars are gorgeous.
