What was your first sports car passenger experience?

Mason's post about the first sports car got me thinking about my first time as a passenger in a performance car and no doubt where my love of sports cars started. I was probably 15 years old and was driven home with some mates in Ford Escort RS Turbo on some country roads at night and compared to my dad's 1.3l Vauxhall Viva it was literally mindblowing! What about you guys, your first sports car experience before you started to drive or bought your first sports car, where did the addiction begin???

Ps- the viva eventually became my first car!

Good idea for a thread, I think it would be travelling in my mate's Saab 900 Turbo 16valve, soo much torque for the time. The mid range wallop was verry impressive, shame they didn't really handle that well.

First open top sports car experience was when i was around 16 and marshalled for the GB Austin Healey National meet which was held locally.... at the weekend one of the guys took me and a mate down the D Road (A500) and back in it... i was on the rear seat .

Loved every minute of it.... one day there will be a blue and white big healey in the garage.

pity this did n't get built and it is based on the Z4.

Other memorable passenger experiences from the 90's were:

1. Saab 9000 CD Turbo.
2. 106 Rallye of an old housemates.

and since my mates Delta Intergrale....

Morgan 3 wheeler with a Jap 'V' twin - complete with leather flying helmet, goggles and Irvin flying jacket (my Dads original WWII stuff)..... good memories

N reg Escort RS Cossie, only got a mile sat in the back, but at 13 years old it was mind blowing, I'd still like to buy one today!

Datsun 280Z belonging to my uncle. Beautiful car :sweetheart: That was it for a fair few years until a white knuckle ride in a Manta GTE.

1993 Mazda RX-7 R-1. A beast! Fast and it felt like it. Suspension that only belonged on the racetrack But it was thus far the most unreliable car I have ever owned.

My first ride in a sports car was many years ago when I was a passenger in an E type Jag. It may be old hat by todays standards but at the time it scared the pants off me. The chap driving it must have been clinicaly insane and it probably started my hair loss. :?

At six years old a ride in a new MK 1 Lotus Cortina seemed a bit special, I remember being told the owner kept a bag of sand in the boot to keep the back end in line due to the twin-cam's power! (110 bhp) I was thrilled.

Then in about 1970 my car-crazy status was cemented with a visit to my fathers friend, who owned a specialist dealership near Bristol. A choice of a ride in a Maserati Bora or a Lamborghini Miura? Both serious supercars, I went for the Miura which was like nothing I had seen before and was sensational with nearly 400bhp and 190 mph potential, not bad in 1970!

for proper performance rather than my dad thinking he was Colin McRae on the country lanes in his cortinas and XR4i ( as much as I used to enjoy it) was actually a 911 turbo when I was about 14 years old.

my dad knew a german guy who lived in the same village as him who was a proper 911 fan, he had 2 911's at one point and I was like a kid at Christmas stood in his garage, especially when he asked which one would you like to go out in?

the first outing was a 911 turbo with myself and my younger brother pinned to the back seats all the way to 160mph. the second outing was in his Carrera 4S around the country lanes in the wet, which was still amazing.

The 3rd outing was in a brand new 911 turbo with some tuning pack he had fitted to it meaning it had about 420bhp, which back in them days was a lot of bhp!

he kept German plates on them as he said it got him out of a lot of trouble on numerous occasions, he always collected them from the factory and drove them home ! a proper petrol head.

these memories I will cherish forever as I have been a car nut all my life!
