About The 2.5...
Z4 2.5i. 2.5-liter, with 184 horsepower and 175 lb-ft. of torque. This "entry-level" power plant provides performance that's anything but entry-level. Though these official power and torque ratings are unchanged from earlier versions of this engine, fine-tuning of the intake system and a new exhaust system enhance its response at low to medium speeds. In a June 13, 2001 comparison test of the BMW 325i sedan against key V-6 competitors, Germany's respected auto motor und sport magazine raved: "The BMW engine is in a class by itself, with six cylinders in a row in a time of V-6s. Inline sixes take up a lot of space and are relatively costly, but in terms of balance they are the ideal engine type. The BMW proves this convincingly: light-footed, vibration-free revving, spontaneous response, and a sound that is not quiet but is outright pleasant." In the Z4 2.5i with manual shift, this unit delivers 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 sec. and achieves the amazing top speed of 146 mph. Its projected EPA mileage ratings are impressive too: 21-mpg city/28-mpg highway with the optional automatic transmission, 20/28 with the 5-speed manual

The 2.5 Si is 211bhp in the UK. Its a detuned 3.0l M54 lump.

The 177bhp variant was the 2.5i.

Yep, the M52 lump in the old 3.0 pre 2006 was 231 bhp. This then changed to the M54 and 265 bhp.

Pre 2006 the 2.5 was a 2.5 and had 192 bhp. After 2006 the M54 3.0l was used to power the 2.5si with 211 bhp, a detuned 3.0.

There was a run out of the 2.5 that was based on the old 3.0! This had about 177-180bhp (cant remember) and was designated the 2.5 (note no "Si" here).

To summarise:

Pre 2006 3.0= 231 bhP (M52)
Post 2006 3.0= 265 bhp (M54)

Pre 2006 2.5= 192 bhp
Post 2006 2.5= 180 bhp'ish (based on old 3.0l M52)
Post 2006 2.5 Si = 211 bhp (Based on new 3.0lsi M54)

DannyBoy, they aren't right :(

(Europe - US are slightly different in power)

Pre-facelift -
2.5 is M54 (2494cc) with 192bhp
3.0 is M54 (2979cc) with 231bhp

Post-facelift -
3.0Si N52 (2996) with 265PS
2.5i N52 (2497) with 177PS
2.5Si N52 (2497) with 218PS

The 3 series and 5 series have done or do tricks with badges that don't match engine sizes but not the Z4
