What tyres?

For the first time, I am needing to replace my rear tyres.

I have Run flat Potenzas on at the moment (225/50 R16)

My question is, which I'm sure has been asked a million times (I tried finding a thread promise!), is it really worth splashing out for the same tyres or should I opt for standard tyres?

I drive on average 120 motorway miles a week plus some about town driving on the weekend etc.

I know you can get the cans that spray into the tyre if the worst should happen, plus I have breakdown cover if I ever get stuck. To me, I'm not really seeing the point in me having run flats

Could you experts please give me an idea what you think? Or direct me to a previous thread

Looking at the prices i'm genuinely staggered £130 for a 16inch runflat
Doubt you will notice much difference in ride from RF to standard on 16s but purely for the price i would switch to standard ,

Cheapest like for like quote I've had from a tyre shop was £170 each..!

Do you have the Avons fitted?

I've seen good things written about the Nokian zLine also, but it's hard to tell what would be most suitable for a Z4

Only Avon's ive tried are ZZ3s , they were "OK" , on a par with Falken's ?
Currently running a set of Kumho Ecstas on my van (200 miles a week ? ) & can only say they have been a revelation after previously being skeptical about them
On around 6-7mm they are quiet,grippy in dry&wet & just feel like i'm running much more expensive rubber :?

Nokian's are more expensive than Avon's but by all accounts they are at the higher end of the mid range , their winter tyres recently outperformed all the big names
Avon's imo are the lower end of the mid range & if price was a factor i wouldn't go below those ? well worth paying the extra £10/£15 a tyre for the step up to Toyo,Dunlops,Nokian's ,Vredestein etc

The only thing that bothers me is that runflats seem to cope well with rapid deflation !
I seem to remember that Tiff Needel fella doing a test some years ago when a tyre was punctured at speed with only minimal effect on the car.

As we use the Autobahn in the summertime and tend to go with the flow, my wife is now twisting on about the speed and conventional tyres,,,,,!

I agree Ron that for their downsides they also have many good points & not all vehicles drive badly on them ,

I'm definitely going for standard tyres, I'll just go through reviews and try and make my mind up

Anyone else have any strong feelings about what tyre would be most suitable?

hey Hazwaz, I'm far from the leading expert on tyres - and also have never had runflats - but I'm sure I've read on here (and elsewhere) that 4 of the same tyres all round is your safest and best bet. Reading your introductory post, it wasn't clear whether you were just going to replace the rears - so if you still have runflats on the front, you could consider 4 new tyres all round. Someone with more knowledge than me will probably confirm on that point - or I'm back off to tyre school if you catch my drift...(no pun intended but I'll take that one!)

Don't think it's illegal Stevo but it's not ideal especially so if you like working your car's potential :wink:
Ive run runflat rears / standard fronts for a time on a temp set & there was no noticeable difference behind the wheel or lights on dash but it was only for a week or so & wouldn't plan on doing it longterm
Mixing on the axle or worse mixing sizes on the axle is a definite no no

I think my front tread is on the way out so I think I'd get them all changed if I was going to non run flats.

After some research I'm leaning towards the Avon ZV5, Hankook Ventus Prime or Nokian zLine
