Well back in december i bought myself a number plate, i used an agent to do this, so technically they bought it and i am a nominee. As it is a "12" plate i cant put it on any car that is older than that and i dont forsee me buying a 12 plate for atleast 3 years. The thing is..whilst i am the only the "nominee" i have to rely on the agents to renew this plate retention every year...and i know its sceptical..im not sure how vreliable they would be (considering they offered to buy the plate from me already).
Now the cheapest way i can see to get around this is to buy a chinese imported motor bike, you can get a new one for between £900 and £1400. I was just interested if any of you had any other ideas/ experience with either this situation or these kind of bikes.....

Why not get them to transfer the plate to you, so that you are no longer the nominee?

Saves you buying a vehicle.

If they argue, then point out that you've already paid for it, and they're refusing to hand over your 'property'.

That's what I'd be doing - I can't think of any genuine reason for them to remain as the named owner. It just gives them the opportunity to "claim" it back at some point in future.

Sounds very dodgy! You've bought the plate, it should be your property to do with as you wish

Agree with the above. Get them to transfer ownership to you - guess they will charge a (small ?) fee to do this though...

How badly do you want the plate. You could always sell it, make a quick buck :)

x2 - sounds dodgy to me. You either own the rights or you don't.

No this is indeed the case..iv comfirmed it with DVLA. The plate is the property of the purchaser (regtransfers) until the Nominee applies it to a car bike ect..then it becomes the property of whoever owns the car. But the car owner can then put it on retention for himself etc. Anyway i went and bought one of these to put my plate on and for some summer fun. Street legal....I bought the blue 250

I had this issue with the Mrs Car, Purchaed a plate through regtransfers for her birthday, but the retenention certificate only lasted 6 Months, so put it on ASAP to avoid any issues.

Its possible to transfer the grantee name (AFAIK), but why they wont is another issues

That's the way they buy it in the first place, but there's also a DVLA process to change the grantee (by simply applying to change the details on the retention document) - otherwise regtransfers is still the owner and can remove you as a nominee anytime they wish.

if you knew someone with a 12 plate car then it would be easy to put it on their car then put it on a retention

They rely on people forgetting.....the £80 transfer is already paid, its what the NC is for, so you could have it put on a vehicle at no further cost.....but if you forget to ask the reg company to renew the NC before it expires it reverts to the DVLA and you lose your money and start all over again.

So try and get it on to a retention cert in your name ASAP.

PS nobody actually 'owns' a registration except the DVLA. Thats why they are called 'cherished' plates technically, not 'personalised'. What you buy is the right to display said plate subject to certain Ts and Cs, and it can be removed from you if you breach them.

I think my NC lasts for 12 months...
