What happened before 7 years was it quiet? Is it normal for it to come down with a bang and a clunk? mine does the same, although if I release the button just before it finally shuts and then press it again, it's quiet as a dodo. I have nothing to measure it with since it's done it from the day I bought the car about 6 months ago.

I use the same trick as you, finger off - finger on for a smooth landing..

The dampers in the roof get weak over the years and in most cases, that results in louder and harder landing sounds. Can be replaced for less than 50 bucks in pairs.
