What to look out for when buying a used Z4 coupe?

I heard something about the HVA's but don't know what it is tbh....can you enlighten me? Hope its not a problem :(
 
its an inermittent problem that BMW know all about but fail to acknowledge

when cold the engine can sometimes not pickup the oil and you get a tapping sound, it normally clears within minutes. there are a few threads on here about it

whether or not it as any long term effect is questionable, personally i would say it definately can not do any good but as to how much long term damage it may cause i have no idea

maybe worth asking if any work as been done on the enging to resolve the problem, some people have had new cylinder head and other have just had the hydraulic valve adjusters changed
 
I tried to call bmw just now but the service dept was shut. As its 6 years old i'd hope if there was an issue it would have showed itself by now and been addressed. Hope its ok as im worried now!

Im sure it'll be fine, if its just a noise and doesnt cause any harm i'll probably live with it anyway even if it does appear!

It seems a fair few people dont have the issue at all though, the previous owner sold it back to the same garage he bought it from which would suggest its problem free at the moment at least!
 
I also came from a Cooper S (R56) - boy, that is a car with a long list of issues!

You will love the Z4. Yours looks to be a great spec.

wouldn't worry too much about the noisy valves , 6yrs old it should have surfaced by now .
just keep the correct oil in with regular changes & don,t thrash it until oil warmed & circulated
my 3-0Si shows 90k & sounds like a rolex :D
 
Cant beat black I dont think!
The dealer emailed me 25 decent pics earlier, it looks like a minter! Ordered a stubby aerial off ebay and will order the black grills up too :)

Ultimately im thinking 19 inch anthracite CSL reps, a drop with either springs or coilovers and a decent backbox. Saw a video on youtube with a 3.0 and a custom exhaust, I want mine to sound like this 8)
