What to Look For?

Yes the wind diffuser makes a lot of difference and it’s annoying to fit but is possible to do with some trim removal tools, a screwdriver and a beer.

A wind diffuser should deffo be on your list. They work really well and are a permanent fixture, so no putting up and down all the time. Buying one after can be expensive and they seem to be a pain to fit.
The other must-haves on your list seem sensible and lots of cars will have them. Just be warned that the i-drive on the E89 is from 2009, so can seem a little old-fashioned IMO.

Thanks Pondrew

Yes i see your point around iDrive but i have been looking around the site and was quite liking the look of the Android car play mod (which i think requires iDrive and the screen). Are the sat nav maps easily upgraded? I know they used to be on 3 series of a similar generation via USB or DVD.

I would have thought you should get a decent 23i with reasonable mileage for around £8k as a private sale.

£10k for a higher mileage one is pushing it a bit IMO.

A 23i is a good choice for the straight 6 soundtrack and bulletproof N52 engine, as 30is seem to be pretty rare although I don't think there is much difference in fuel economy as you'd probably drive a 23i a bit harder than a 30i!

I don't know about E89s but on E85/6s Bi-Xenons were an option well worth seeking out as the standard Halogens were pretty hopeless.

Good luck finding a Z4 that ticks all the boxes, but I really wouldn't worry too much about any with 5 figure mileages if the price is right.

Pretty sure ALL E89s came with xenons (bi) from launch in 2009.
Pre-face lift (2009-2013) had halogen 'halo' DRLs, then went LED. No 23is were facelift (I think they stopped the N52 in 2011 or 2012) so unless retrofitted they won't have them.

Nobody really seems to mention that as part of the idrive you get a hard drive that stores lots of music that can be imported direct from the CD drive. Its also a lot easier to navigate the menus for servicing etc.
If you have never had it you probably wouldnt miss it but once you have had it in a car it would be a must have.

I agree that it’s a great user interface to access a myriad of facilities…and if you’ve had it it’s a must have going forward.

In contrast to many later interfaces it’s relatively simple and consistent and easy to use.

The CarPlay upgrade continues the theme nicely with a simple clean interface that looks like it’s part of the same family.

I know it’s relatively pointless but I do like how it folds away..

The Audi / Merc iPad stuck out of the dashboard just looks clunky..

Each to their own…

Another point to add about the idrive is you can update the BMW maps. I find BMW mapping works pretty well although not fully featured like waze or Google maps it’s still very capable and if like me you have the Apple CarPlay / Android auto MMi box fitted and you find yourself in an area without phone signal the standard iDrive maps will still work and get you where you need to be.

i have had iDrive previously on a 2010 320d (it was about 12 years ago) also my daughter has it on her 1 series and i agree it is a very good way to navigate.

It's a 2006 R1.
Was my last bike, I sold it last year as after owning for 15 years I wasn't using it. With prices skyrocketing after covid it seemed the best time to sell. Over the 15 years I only lost £1700.

There's a few bikers and ex bikers on here and a thread somewhere with owners bikes.
