What to get....

So, having sold the Z4 Roadster back in December, I just can't decide what to get next.... I would assume that this forum would give a one sided reply but I will give it a go...

Z4M Roadster
Z4M Coupe
911 996 C4S
Cayman S

Or.... two cars?

BMW E36 M3 Evo Track Car and a nice E46 Cab...?

I probably won't be able to do it until Christmas this year or April next year but just can't decide.
I have driven a Carrera and an M Roadster but not Cayman yet...
Could have about £20k to £25k if I' lucky...

I just got myself a big double garage and it seems a shame to leave it empty. I already have an E46 330i Touring which is my dog crarriott.

What would you do...

Can you get a C4S with 25k?? If you can then go for that one! Goes brilliantly, sounds great and looks great with the 996 Turbo bodykit. Interiors look very dated though but that doesnt affect the driving does it?

Stick a nice rorty exhaust on it and revel in the trademark Porsche flat-six howl. :driving:

+1 on the C4S although it'll be interesting to see what happens to the prices over the next six months or so. It's a great car and very desirable - a lot of the Porsche press put it number 2 behind the GT3, in the 996 range. I think that it stands out enough to hold the future value up - unlike the 997 where the C4S doesn't look that different from the rest of the range - look at the 3.2SSE and 964 Celebration / Anniversary prices!

Find a decent specialist and the servicing shouldn't be too bad either on those...
996 Carrera 12,000 £155
24,000 £265
48,000 £365
Not sure if it's due to the need to service classic 911s but there is a good specialist network and is less of a stigma attached to non-OPC servicing on older cars.

You'll hear about RMS issues, it's not as bad as people make out, in terms of the rate of attrition. Against say a classic 911 which are meant to be more robust, but you'll get the bills elsewhere. Apparently there is an article in this month's GT Porsche about this [EDIT: Last month's apparently - might be online]. There's a specialist (at least one) that offers a retro fit RMS fix, if you want to go the preventative route. Otherwise get a Turbo or GT3

No doubt you'll change your mind many times between now and the purchase date, but nice list!

Sorry, this will sound all too predictable, but you'll be able to pick up a good Z4M for £15-18k.

I just can't see how anything else compares at that kind of price. And they Z4 has by far the best forum out of all the cars!

I am a fan of the Cayman too, but not mega keen on the 996 - but I've never driven one and I suspect that is the reason why.

Cayman S is nice, though not so keen on the rear end and the interior is FUGLY!

996 is a bit dated and I reckon at that price range you'll just end up with big bills...

Z4MR/C looks nice, has an amazing engine and is brilliant to drive.

Personal order would be...

Z4MC
Cayman S
Z4MR
996

That looks good! Possibly I could pick up a ESS Supercharger while I'm over in the US?

I'm going to test a C4S and a Cayman soon when I get home for sure - as said however, it will probably change many more times before then.
911 Virgin do have a nice red C4S in stock for £27k however

Think I'd steer clear of 996's and early 997's.

If money is no object, it has to be the 996 C4s. I'm not really sure how anyone could think a Z4 can offer such a complete overall package. If money is a factor then an 09 Cayman S has to be the way to go for me.

Comments from Peddy and Kryton are what you can expect ref the 996 - it is based on experience, but you just need a decent one to start with. History is essential - although not necessarily OPC.

To give you an idea of what you can get...
Carrera 4S 2002

That's a friend's old car - sold it a couple months ago for around £22k, I think. If I'd known Phil Raby took trade ins I may well have been tempted, it's a lovely car. It was my friend's daily commuter for a year or so, from Reading area to Coventry a few days a week - he then also has the new XKJ, for the daily grind, and to keep the 996 for Sunday best, but he didn't use it enough. A few minor issues, but a very good car - with the springs, window regulators and roof motor a lot cheaper in terms of repairs than my Z!

In addition to the history it is worth getting a PPI and Phil Raby, if you're in the 911 Virgin area, is very well regarded - and does the inspections. I wouldn't buy without one. He's also the editor of Total 911. I'd give him a call and ask about the inspection service and see what he has to say about the 996 reliability.

As with all cars of that original purchase price there are potentially bigger bills - just look at the std Z4 and the M, so research is key.

Great reply, thanks.
I'm not in the 911 Virgin area but have always liked their stock and read a really good review in a magazine.
I will do some reading on the subjects!
Cheers
