What to do with an old PC

As above, remove the drive and destroy with a mallet.

Then... depending on the computer either;

A) if it's a Mac, stick it on ebay.

B) if it's a PC, stick it in a skip. :P

Mine was a PC so of to the skip it goe's :thumbsup:

Just wiping data achieves nothing. All deletion or formatting does is remove the file headers....the data is all still there but able to be overwritten. I've got at least three easy-to-find programmes on my laptop that will recover deleted or formatted disks; its far easier than you'd think.

There are simple programmes like CCleaner that, properly set up, will shred your recycle bin contents (after you've deleted your data) and overwite it with the highest level of security making it absolutely inaccessible.

But if you are at all worried, the simplest way is to remove the hard drive and crush it. :thumbsup:
 
Or get yourself a HDD external hard drive case (probably a 3.5") with USB lead for about £10 and use the old drive for backing-up, I keep loads of old photo's and music on mine :)

Use DBAN to wipe your disks before selling the old PC. You might even make more money by selling the components separately.

+1 on DBAN although the OP has taken a hammer to his :)

Our company policy is no HDD leaves the company. They are all securely destroyed. If you know anyone with an NDT facility, a de-gauser will also make short work of them.

I've used DBAN on previous disks with minor personal information like my music files or pictures.

Agreed on corporate disks needing something more "permanent" though. :fuelfire:
 
Buy an external case for the hard drive, which are quite cheap, and use it as a backup Hd. People don't buy second hand PC's anymore. New ones are pretty cheap.

Just replace the hard drive with a new one. They don't cost that much these days. If the computer is worth less than a new hard drive, scrap it! :P

Wish i'd seen your post before i'd trashed the HDD just had a on look YT and it's very easy to make it into an external HDD :(
