what to do with a old z4

my z4 has been sat on the drive for a few years now not getting driven much at all. It needs some work done, but the question is:

1. do i sell it as is, let someone part it, track it, fix it.

2. fix it myself and sell after

it’s got some very rare bits so might be worth a part up.
OEM carbon leather dash
eisenmann race exhaust
gruppeM intake
strut brace
hardtop
CSLs

If you enjoy the car fix it up and drive it.

If you don't then flog it. May be piece meal, if that works out more profitable. But unless you have all the original bits then the mod cons need to stay on the car to sell it and will be worth little premium as such, but should make it easier to sell.

How much work is needed to get it back into good order? Sounds like at some point it was a loved car

You’d get good money for the OEM carbon leather dash so worth replacing that with stock Ali trim.

It all depends on your circumstances, do you have the time and skills to fix it up yourself? If it’s not been used much over the last few years then you either don’t have time for it or your not getting pleasure from driving it,
If you’re going to sell the you’d probably be better off waiting a few months until spring (assuming your in the UK) when there should be more interest especially if it’s a e85.

I’ve been enjoying buying old girls and bringing them back to life. Don’t underestimate the effort though.

Sounds like you’re not in a rush though. You could float it out there as is and see what nibbles you get.

I had the pleasure / misfortune of doing my first rear quarter panel this week. (2 of them in fact)
The first of everything is always the worst but I was on the verge of speed dialling the scrap man. Defo not enjoyable at that point

The z4 bug has only been 18 months

But the older BMWs- over ten years now!

Needs getting on a ramp and a good inspection to see what's what before you decide. If you're near Derbyshire I'll be doing underneath restorations to various levels in the new year. Free consultation if it's of any interest.

If it's the 2003 3.0 you were looking to ditch this time last year I'd be inclined to take advantage of the buoyant market conditions - with all the extras you've mentioned you shouldn't have much of a problem moving it on for a decent price and giving someone else the headache of what to do with it who may have the benefit of that being they're only focus

It was my pride and joy, but I don't have the time or space to play with it anymore. The misses preferes driving RRS, and the z4 is lowered and not the most sensible with london speed bumps.

i've got a bit of time over xmas at the inlaws so will make a start. Will put it up for sale in the new year (i have the ali dash also)

List of bits that need doing, (i've started today)

front bumper has a small dent right in the centre.
front bumper various scratches
driver door has a 5cm patch of no lacquer
various small scratches, probably every panel
the hardtop has paint chip on one corner
driver wing has a dent, i have a new wing in the right colour but the two t30's inside the indicator wont budge, soaking with oil but might need to cut off.
hardtop motor needs refilling with hydro - I have the oil, will need a new bowden cable i would think too. Best to fit it into the boot now.
bonnet cable needs replacing, ordered a new cable and latch.
wipers being funny - the motor was sitting in a swimming pool, cleaned out the connections, new relay coming, but might need to replace motor
new battery today, old one wouldnt hold charge
a rat has eaten loads of the sound deadening - bit of a plus can hear the gruppeM better, but getting rid of rat poo was pretty rank.
glove needs new latch
centre compartment needs new latch
would like to replaces the rad, its seen better days, works fine.
driver window goes up/down the wrong way, replaced the glass last year and got it wrong way round, havent had time to change it

Do all that and you might as well get it back on a stock suspension set-up and keep it.
Alternatively just relocate Mr Rat to the RRS - job done

Hi there, I am presently looking for a z4 3l project with low miles. I don't want to pay a dealer markup as there's nothing they can do I cannot do, but happy to take a look at an offer. Can you pm me the spec and I can take a look at? I've been to see two in the last three days and dije a couple if hundred miles with a oanel beater friend, neither are worth the money when they both needs some attention, the first with bodywork 'only minor - ha', wheels need stripping and refurbing, and the interior was very 'used/scratched', raising question only the VIN will reveal, if any. One thing I have concluded is I definitely want the 3 litre. The second thing is that I wouldn't touch a SPG box with a barge-pole, it is worse than I thought, with juddery slack take up in first and then quite a dodgery clunky change into second, have to wait for advice on a refurb of this tomorrow from DSG specialists tomorrow, anyone got any experience of these? So unkess that dealer droos his price by £1,500 Im not going to risk it. So present thinkingis that it has to be a manual 6 speeder. Ideally I would like cruise control or to be able to easily fit it.

Welcome to the forum Scott.

I wouldn't get too hung up on cruise control. Whether you get this or another one 2003 and some 2004 Z4s were pre-wired for all the options, including cruise control. BMW still sell the control stalk (about £100 I think) and if the car isn't pre-wired there is a forum member who can supply the section of wiring loom needed pretty cheap.
