What to do on a cold, snowy windy afternoon..sit down with your DSP!

B21

Lifer
I've bought an Audiotec Fischer Match UP 10 DSP digital amp and DSP tp replace the 677 Top Fi set up in the 35is..

https://www.audiotec-fischer.de/en/match/amplifiers/up-10dsp

I bought the SDM125 box that allows the fibre optic signal with the audio information from the head unit to be decoded and fed to the DSP/amp

https://www.audiotec-fischer.de/en/helix/accessories/sdmi25

Amongst many other bits I bought a specific BMW to Match 1p cable adapter.

Given the confusing and overlapping nomenclature over names for various speaker positions I was suspicous that yet again, like the 676 Hi-FI version and the Match 7 that was 'plug n play' that it wouldn't all work out perfectly.

So I sat down today for about 5 hours to try and see if the custom cable matched and which amp channel (there are 10)on the DSP was powering what speaker..

Super colour coded spreadsheet later..plus multi meter..

So bottomed it out..as I suspected close but not exact.. most of the audio out of the orginal 677 amp goes via a 20 pin connector.

BUT..the rear centre channel between the seats at head height for reasons only known to BMW comes out on another connector whose primary job is to supply power to the amp.

Quite why oh why they did this when there are two spare connector pins going begging on the 20 way connector god only knows.

I guess, yet again, on the E89 they bodged and existing design to save costs.

AF obviously lost the will to do something about it as the 10 channel amp has one spare channel which would marry nicely with the missing rear centre channel..but they just didn't bother..

I'll work a way to patch that channel across to that connector.

It wll have to wait till the spring / summer when I finish building my garage and then can take the back end of the car apart in the warm and dry..all first world problems..

What did you do today?

Quite so..its taken me a while to pluck up courage and sit down in a darkened room to do this..

DSPs allow you to do magic things with audio in places like cars where its very difficult to get 'decent sound' of course what is decent sound..

The problem is that when you listen to your Hi-FI in your living room then it should look like this..

https://www.qacoustics.co.uk/blog/2016/04/08/how-to-set-up-your-hi-fi-speakers/

Setting-up-your-Hi-Fi-speaker-for-best-sound-4.jpg

In the house, if you want, you can position the speakers, choose the furnishings and then playback very faithfully an audio image of what was intended..

In a car there are many problems, the driver is not sat in the optimum position, there are hard and reflective surfaces causing refllections, interference effects caused by the multiple locations of speakers, the time it takes them to get to the driver, the fact they bounce of some surfaces, get absorbed by others, the amps and speakers are not matched in terms of sensitivity, frequency response..every speaker is different.

What a DSP allows us to do is to negate all those effects and through digital signal processing (DSP) align all the speakers in time and space so a single coherent sound image appears to the driver, just as if he was sat at home, eyes close in his home hi-fi set up.

Realise for many that this a first world problem that passes most by..but for some its brings pleasure to be able to enjoy msuic largely as it was intended, top up or down at any speed you so choose.. ( well most speeds)

Hope that helps?

My lack of quality stereo sound is sorted, I turn it down and listen to my 35i through the Miltek exhaust

Each to their own  :driving:

I just turn up the volume instead..

2 sub channels on that DSP?

I gave up tweaking sound in cars. There's just too many constantly changing sonic dynamics at play and then added to that a convertible with the top down and it becomes a pointless exercise to try and attain anything acceptable.

I find myself (if I'm on my own) plugging in headphones a lot more on long journeys these days for a much better result.

A new cable I made up today for connecting a DAP to my HD820S's exclusively for use in the zed...

Yes its got two pairs of 160 watts rms channels..one set for the new subbies behind the seats and I'll use the other set for the new woofers in the footwells..

This baby can come with an expensive off board config system , which of course I have

https://www.audiotec-fischer.de/en/brax/accessories/director-display-remote-control

So you can have seperate DSP settings for top down windows up, top down windows down and top up etc..

I've tried the headphones but prefer the openess and the ability to hear external sounds well..each to their own

No, not just you!
Remembering with glassy eyes the days when upgrading your car stereo involved going to Halfords, spending a couple of hundred quid on an Alpine head unit, and a pair of Pioneer 6" x 9"s. Then taking a couple of hours to fit them. Happy days.

It definitely didn't involve three PC monitors and spreadsheets :)

Yes the good old days when you used cut large holes in the parcel shelf to pop the biggest speakers you could fit in there lol

Co-incidentally I bought a load of Q Acoustics speakers just before xmas. Not very impressed TBH. Look nice, sound very average:|
