what to buy

My better half is looking for a new car and has selected the Audi TT 225 and the Z4 as her car of choice. Im slightly worried about the Z4 as her budget is around the 9.5k mark and although there are Z4's out there around that price what sort of car would we be getting

We are test driving a Z4 2.5i at the weekend so any advice would be helpful

Cheers will do, however what should i be looking out for when test driving the Z4....and honestly are the chances of getting a quality car for that money low?

test drive em both and buy the one you like the most?

And to add, I have the 2003 and have had the standard problems with rear springs, roof motor and airbag light... thankfully some were fixed free and others spread over period of 3.5 years ownership. List the options you view as must have and see which can be cheaply retro-fitted - plenty of advice on here in case you find a car without the spec you want. That said, any 03/04 Z4 will have the key spec boxes ticked - 6 cyclinder engine, rear wheel drive... that's about it. 8)

knowing friends' Audis of that period mine has proved the more reliable car. But there is some luck in these things.

Happy hunting!

I have heard of a lot more problems with Audi TT's than i have with Z4's. What exactly are you worried about?
I know which is the better drivers car, but thats up to your missus really. Just forgive the car a little for its runflat tyres as they do make the car wander a bit. If you buy one, changing the tyres makes a huge difference.

If it was my missus she would buy the TT, its easier to drive/park and more comfy/forgiving.

Dont bother with the TT, i have owned one (the MK1 Coupe 225) and it was the worst mistake of my life. As i have posted on here many times before, i had the following problems within a 8 month period.

MAF sensor X2
Alarm sensor
New battery
Dump valve
The 6cd changer never worked properly
Dashpod - this featured on bbc watchdog - audi wanted 700 to replace it.
Turbo
Then finally a new engine was needed after the turbo failing and spitting bits of metal into the engine, Audi wanted 6500.00.

Not only this, i have had friends who have also had TT's who have had problems, some quite major including issues with the DSG gearbox (now thats expensive). I once asked an Audi mechanic when he was dropping me off at work while my car was been looked at, he said that nearly all their work is replacement parts on Audi TT's.

They are absolutely shi**. As for my Z4 (2003 53 3.0iSE) with 58k miles on the clock, its my daily driver and having owned it for nearly 2 years, all i have had is a fuse blow in the cigarettte lighter. Took 30 seconds to replace. You cannot compare the two cars in terms of reliability.

Mates TT experience was possibly actually slightly worse that Easty!

Completely forgot, daveg kindly put this together which will help...

There's a chap on here Alex aka helix... he's sorting out the bodwork on his Z4 at the moment to sell or give back to BMW, that's a 3.0 but against the buy price you may be able to do a deal. We've had an exchange of mails, but I don't know the car personally.

cheers guys and gals for all the info, guess there are pros and cons for both cars

Anyone recommend and good dealers in the South, going to see a car on sun at Bullitt Cars but heard best stay away from Big Motoring World ( or something like that)

I was looking at TTs when I was looking for a car couple of months ago. From what I remember second hand TTs hold the value very well compared to the Zed - bad news if you are buying second hand car (good news if you are buying new!).

Anyway I couldn't live with TT's looks or image and I'm glad I went for slick z4C

having just purchased one myself, you certainly can get nice Z4's for £9500.

i paid more than that myself but i really wanted a black one, if you'd be happy with a silver or grey you could get one for that money, if you would settle for the blue colour you could get a fantastic one from what i've seen.

last time i looked on autotrader there were 3 blue ones, 1 with 19,000 miles and the other with 29,000, i would of thought the sellers would knock £500 off of their listed prices to bring it in budget for you.

Good luck whatever you decide and keep an eye out of the common problems already being sorted, rear springs, roof motor etc.

TTs are for wimminz.

And the convertible version actually does look like a mobile hair salon, what with those chrome roll bar bits behind the headrests.

New ones are quite shiny (the TTRS is just phenomenal), but the older ones are really naff. Get a Z or a Lotus or something decent instead.

thats the other thing, the roofs on the tt's arent that good, when closed and from the inside it looks like a pram ! you can see the roof bars, hinges etc..the roof on the z4 is finished very well both inside & outside..

my girlfriend is now the proud owner of a Z4!!!!!!!!!

congratz, that was quick!

what flavour did you get in the end?

I think that's the right choice, the drive in a TT and Z4 can't really be compared.

A touching story... now make with the specs and the pictures!

Seriously though, good effort... you didn't hang around! Trust you'll be getting your turn behind the wheel. What does that leave you with? Given what we've written before, LMAO if it's a TT!

I get to drive the sensible diesel Vectra and she gets the sporty number ha ha so the chances of getting my hands on it are slim

yep so Merlot Red 2003 on 03 with 58k on the clock, full service and mint condition :D

Merlot Red 2.5i

Sorry... hadn't connected the two threads

Sounds like a great deal too... Bullitt are within reasonable range for me - always worth knowing a decent dealer! Car dealer.
