a 997 !

I know they are different cars, but still both good handling sports cars. I nearly bought a MC last year, this year I am also feeling the lure of a 997. for up to about £23k I could get a 2004/5 3.8 C2S or a really low mileage M and have some change..

Why would you buy the M over the 911? or is the 911 now a no brainer?

I'd have the 911. I've always been a big fan, just never had the opportunity.

It would have to come with a warranty though

I looked at a 911 prior to the M, but servicing was brutal.

Mine is a 15k a year car, so need to take it into account

A question that is considered by lots on the forum I'm sure :)

Biggest thing, is running and upkeep and repair costs a potential worry?
If not then it's a subjective preference, both are good cars, what are your say top three deciding points?

If you can't decide, get a 997 as it's not not going to loose much in depreciation if you don't like it, just get the best example you can get for your money.

Yes, pretty sure it would have to be manual. Prob grey or black, but quite like blue as well.

Criteria ?? Hmm.

Reliability
Expense
Thrills....
Noise.

Will 997's ever be the same price as M's ? My mind boggles.....

I was all set for either a 996 or 997, but the potential for something to go pop on anything but a metzer put me off.. Plus from a sense of raw thrills they're very different cars. Still tempted by a 996/997 turbo though, and did have a very good test drive in a 997 too. head vs heart in a way :headbang:

I wouldn't be taking a punt on a £23k 997 with the engines made from cheese. These will be sub £20k very soon with no signs of stopping. Plenty of them around and most abused. A nice Z4M makes much more sense for everything.

An M would be a second car and cheaper to buy by potentially £10k, but I could use the 997 as the main drive as it has the extra storage in the rear. The main problem I read with the gen 1 997 is bore scoring which is a result of over revving. An auto would cure that I suppose... I could also look for a sub 10 year old one and get a warranty by Porsche. This will give peace of mind. Then there is that turbo body to drool over.....

If it was going to be a second car then I would prob be thinking roadster and just use for nice weather like today 8)

Reliability is not the 997's forte...

If that's your main criteria then Z4MC all the way

 +1 Engine troubles on the 3.6 S phase 1(pins from memory). There's an article on Ego Buyer's Guide a few years back and its accurate. A friend bought one 2nd hand and it blew its engine 1000 km latter. Check the work has been done and it will be fine, its a great car and far better GT/ daily than Z4MC. Less exiting too...

Why a second car? Do you need to carry stuff around or do a lot of miles? No reason an M car can not be used as a primary car.

it needs space to be able to cope with 6-8 grocery shopping bags if it were a main car, also no chance of carrying a 3rd person is a drawback.

I hear that the MRoadster is faster than the MCoupe also :fuelfire:

Bags will easily fit, I have a roadster and have got stuff in I never would have thought possible, it helps if when you were a kid to be good at puzzles! Extra seat more of a problem
