What to buy... (Government Scrappage)

Have been running a nice-enough Peuguot 406 HDI for about 2 years now, runs fine but after a couple of faults im thinking of getting rid. Last thing was the bonnet jumping up and leaving huge dents, and it's not worth replacing as the car value is about £500. Would be sorry to see it go as it's very comfortable and laps up long journeys, but if I could get £2k for it, I'd be ecstatic.

So I'm tempted to do the government scrappage thingy, and had started shortlisting bargains, my first list being:

Fiat 500 - down to £6,300
Fiat Panda - down to £5,499
Ford Ka - down to about £6,000
Hyundai i30 - about £4,999 with 5 yrs warranty

the key was that i'd probably do 5k miles/12months in it then resell privately for as much as possible.

only problem I've just discovered my car was built 9/9/00, meaning as a V-Reg it's 9 days late to qualify. Which is an arse, as I'd all but ordered a Fiat 500 until I found out.

So I either give up on the idea, or buy a Nissan or Mitsubishi, who are both offering the £2,000 incentive on cars that are slightly younger than 10yrs.

Sound rubbish? Did to me, until I discovered this little fella, a Mitsubishi Colt CZC. A four seat coupé-cabrio with a 1.5i four cylinder engine, and aircon as standard, for an incredible £9,999, possibly down to £7,699, also with 0% APR finance!

Has anyone had any experience before I book a drive ? :)

bummer about the 9 days :(

the little mitsubishi looks good - certainly worth a look and better looking than the Micra CC...

ugh ive just found a gallardo for 59k...

im gonna drive the mitsi.. if fiat definitely won't budge, it's the way to go.

I think it's a good car - go for it! £7.5k for a convertible with an electric metal roof? You'd be mad not to!

Honestly? You would look a right twat in that CZC  :P

CZT is better

What about a Nissan GTR, i hear they are offering the 2k scrappage scheme discount thing

if i can get a GTR for 7.5k ill be there by lunchtime

I think they're cool... I'm defo gonna drive one.

Took a while of reading that to see what you've said.. but no.. it's all about residual value!

To be honest though, I'd love a 500, excellent practical city cars...

But hey thanks for the comment.. :|

If it was me i'd buy a newer 'old smoker', ghia x mondeo tdci's can be had very cheaply and will be comfy like your 406 on long runs and good on fuel too (plus heated screen is brill in the winter and the estates are very handy) :D

That little red car would not be my first choice for a runabout/workhorse.

I saw one of the car shows recently that showed you can get a better deal by phoning around than the scrappage offers. Worth trying

Does the Mitsibushi come with a box? If so KEEP THE BOX. I'm told that when you re-sell toy cars if you have the original box the're worth much more....! :D
