What the ? is with the air cleaner ?

No - I didn't discover a bird sucked into the intake duct work.

So I pulled the air cleaner to check it out.
4 clips lickety split ...No issues.
Looked like a normal paper air filter.
Then after I re-installed it I took a peek up into the upper half of the plastic housing,
And there was another filter up there ?
What's up with this one ?
Looked similar to one of those cabin filters.
Larger white filter vanes.
I didn't try to yank in out.
Can anyone tell me what this second filter, on top of the regular filter is all about ?

I don't recall seeing a second filter in mine!

Is it an optional extra?

Are you sure it was a paper filter? Were they not simply fixed deflectors or perhaps you were looking at the air mass meter? There is not a second air cleaner element on either the M54 or the N52.
