What size wheels will fit...

I am looking to put some smaller wheels on my '03 3.0 e85 as an experiment in improving the ride quality on my daily commute...

Does anyone know if can I get 16" wheels over the brakes?

Has anyone else done this and can share their findings?

I think 17 inch is the limit over 3.0 brakes. As an alternative have you thought about increasing the profile of the tyres by 5% . Like they are on the z4m for example

I thought I read somewhere that 16" will fit a pre-facelift 3 litre, but not a facelift.

If you are anywhere near Berkshire I've got a set of 16s you're welcome to try! :)

I hadn't thought about the profile, but I am pretty sure my tyres are all wrong anyway - the previous owner fitted e85 wheels and I think they didn't know that the profile is a percentage of width rather than a measurement... So front and rear are both 40 profile, also, I've probably got quite a few more miles left in these tyres before they need changing anyway!

Thanks for the offer - I have a few sets of 16" wheels from other cars (e31, e39, e38) I've got a bit of a bad back and I'm just being lazy really!

But... are your wheels e85/6 specific? could you measure the inside diameter for me please (if you have a moment and it's not too much of a ball ache) as I expect different wheels have slightly different measurements...

Ah, well they aren't quite!

One set is from an E46, but they are the same as E85 in that they are 7Jx16 with ET47:- http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/bmw_alloy_wheels/3_series_e46_5_compact_alloys/16_bmw_45_wheel_57

The others are from an E9* - Style 154 7Jx16 ET34:- http://www.alloywheelsdirect.net/bmw_alloy_wheels/3_series_e90_alloys/16_bmw_154_wheel_32
