What should I do ?

I currently have a 3.0 SMG (03) as a weekend car and a 2.0 Kia Pro c'eed diesel as my daily driver. However, due to having had a little bundle of joy 12 months ago, I don't get to drive the Zed much at all now.

Given that I only drive 6 miles to work, we use my wife's car for family outings and it is getting increasingly difficult to get my son into the back seat of a 3 door car, I am looking at alternatives. It makes no sense for me to have 2 cars, so I am looking at 3 options:

1) Sell the Kia and use the E85 as my daily driver.
2) Sell both cars and get an E89.
3) Sell both cars and get a family saloon (possibly one of the Olympic 520d's).

I pick my son up from nursery, so I do need a baby seat / ISOFIX.

So, what should I do ?

I would be really interested in peoples comments who have gone from an E85 to an E89 - particularly in regards to space (height).
 
I have 2 kids.

You will realise that your spirit in you will never let go of the boy racer.

So ideally, the way I work it out is to use the Z every now and then, or when picking up my son from school if the day is nice.

As a daily I have a crossover which is perfectly suited to the childrens needs (buggies, bicycles etc...)

So ideally keep the Z and Kia and instead of upgrading choose a nice crossover/small suv.
 
When you say "wife's car" is that a third car as well as the Z4 and the Kia?

I was in a similar position. Had a Z4 and a Honda HRV as a daily driver along with a Suzuki Grand Vitara for the wife. 2 kids so didn't use the Z4 that much but always knew that would happen. The other 2 were no pleasure to drive and that was the problem. Whenever you go anywhere as a family you have to take something crap.

My wife still has the Vitara as it's cheap and ideal for all the kids stuff and her horse stuff which involves a bit of driving around muddy farm yards. I sold the other 2 cars and bought a brand new 125d. It means I have a do all car with 218bhp 450nm torque (such silly things matter to me for fun) yet it's cheap to tax and cheap to run every day for my 60 mile round trip commute.

In your position there is absolutely no way I'd be buying a diesel and if i was i'd be looking for something quicker than a 520d. On your mileage I'd be buying a large engined petrol saloon. I don't see how an e89 will make the situation any different than it is and could even be worse if you end up having another kid (trust me, it can happen sooner and easier than you think).
 
Yep, wife's car is a 3rd car (another Kia - the 7 year warranty is difficult to beat).

I agree about the diesel - especially with DPF & DMF issues down the road. The ex-Olympic cars are well spec'd and a bit of a snip with at least 10k off the list price and is the main reason I was looking at them.

The thing is, after having had a powerful convertible, I know I would always regret getting rid of it to have a family saloon. I still regret to this day selling my Gen 7 Celica - probably the only car I will ever have from new because my GF (now wife) persuaded me it was too small.

Keeping the Kia makes no sense - I am really struggling to get my son in the back. If another car is parked next to it, I have virtually no chance to get in as the doors are so long.
 
Paulg , I have pre-empted this by striking early before our baby comes along in May, by buying the 911, as we will just not use a 2 seater once the baby comes along so had to be 4 seats, other contenders were M3 Vert , RS4 Vert errr that was about it !

If you’re a petrol head it will not go away so I reckon a 4 seater /sports/coupe is the way forward and get rid of the Kia... form 2 to 1 , less insurance , tax , mot everything just makes sense to me IMO

We have a small bundle of joy due in 8 weeks, knowing that the Zed won't get much use it has gone out on loan to my father in law. :cry:
 
Instead of buying an E89, have you thought about an E93, if you ever want to go out as a family the extra two seats in tha back is useful. Do you need a diesel? Getting a 2.5 or 3.0 petrol will give you good performance at a lower price than the diesel equivalent
 
The problem with all convertibles is they are 2 door. Trying to get a baby into the back seat of a 2 door (especially when some numpty has just parked right next to you at nursery :x ) is a real pain. I could put the baby seat in the front, but front seats rarely have Isofix fittings and belts are a pain to fix & unfix regularly. At least with the E89 the Isofix is on the front seat.

I agree about the diesel though.
 
If it wasn't for the amount of fuel I go through due to my commute I would have had an M135i. I've always been more a hot hatch person than a coupe/sports car type though. If I had been going for a used car it would probably have been an RS4 avant mmmmmmmmmmmm V8.

Despite the long door problem of the e93 the other issue is that the folding hardtop takes up a ridiculous amount of space in the boot. My mother in law has one and when she has the kids and therefor the pram she always has to have the lid up. The Z4 had more boot space with the lid down.

My wife has the Ceed. A more gutless 1.6 engine is impossible to imagine.

As for the 6 series suggested by mr wilks - lovely but 2 doors and again the problem with the baby seat in the back. The C class - now there is a thought...

Its a CLS bit different to a C-Class!

How about a Golf? Good compromise, can come in a nice engine size and can be sporty if you want..
 
Sorry - I meant CLS, I got confused after starting to look at the MB website.

Not thought about the Golf. I have a colleague who has one and loves it.
