What should I be paying?

Hi All,

Just wondering if I could get some advice before I go out and buy a Z4 that i've had my eye on for a few days now (these cars don't hang around long, so any responses would be greatly appreciated) :D

It's a 53 plate Z4 3.0 SE Roadster in Sterling Grey with only 19k miles on it. Pretty much standard spec but with the inclusion of a wind deflector. It's had a BMW service and appears to be in immaculate condition.

So......

how much should I be paying for it? Can anyone tell me what Glass say the current price should be?

To be honest i'm not looking for a bargain, so don't mind paying market value.

Many thanks in advance guys

A friend of mine in the trade got me a 53-plate Sterling grey 3.0SE in January with sports suspension and 45k miles for £14k6, which was just a couple of hundred over the trade price that I know he paid for it. At the time, Glass said £14k8 trade price for the car.

I was at the BMW dealer in Llandudno Junction a couple of weeks ago, and all they had was 2.0 Z4s. I commented on this to one of the sales people, and he said that the bigger engined cars were not selling, and that it was the smaller-engined cars that were in demand.

So, somewhere up to £14k seems to be about right, but given the present mass hysteria in the UK over the cost of fuel, it is a buyer's market for the larger-engined cars at present, and loan cash is not as free as it once was, so you should be in a good position to get a really good deal.

£14k sounds like a good price if it's the basic spec. Add a bit more if it has some extras like heated heats, premium hi-fi.

I would look at e-bay to find a comparative vehicle - There are lots available so take your time.

Buying a car is a big investment and each individual needs to take their own approach. Do you want to pay more for a dealer prepared car, knowing that its more expensive, but sleeping peacefully at night? Or do you want to take your chances with a private sale and perhaps spend some of the huge savings on a third party warranty?

I think that that given the current climate and the fact that this is a private sale then £14K sounds a little steep. I think all of us current owners would like to think our cars are worth more than they really are. The fact is that the first 20% of the purchase price paid to a dealer is lost instantly.

I undoubtedly paid too much for my car, but fell in love with it and knew I had to have it.

So, don't rush, look around. When you see the right car (preferably with some goodies that the original owner has paid for and lost out on) at the right price then go for it!

Good Luck.

i got a 53 Plate, 3.0I SE with 45K miles in January for 13500. It was from a dealer (not bmw) The car had the following:-

18" 108's
Carver Stereo upgrade
Red Leather
Heated & Electric Seats
Wind deflector
12 Months Mot
And was in excellent condition.

Hoep this helps.

Let me guess, if the same dealer had only 3.0's on the forecourt the story would have been "no one wants the 2.0's even in this climate as the 3.0's are just as economical..."

Never believe what someone selling something says!

looking at other threads for current market, seems about right.

i can't believe if you flick through autotrader so many 3.0 with above average mileage for 2003 cars etc. asking for £15/16k+

No, it is not quite that simple. No-one was trying to sell me anything! It has all turned rather horrid here in North Wales!

The dealership in the Junction used to be independent, but was bought out by Halliwell Jones of Chester. So complicated... I cannot be bothered. Anyway, tbe Junction now seens to be used as a place to sell cars tha are acceptable to the plebs here that the pratricians in Chester would not like.

Oh, well... The received wisdom around here was to use the people at the Junction and avoid H-J. I use an independent so I don't know whether this is right (but I guess it is), So, I think that the new management might see their Welsh arm as just being a dumping ground for cars that are below the expectations of their Chester crowd.

£12.5 absolute max as a private sale, someone on here sold a nice one a couple of weeks ago (better spec than that one) for £13.5k and it was an 05 or 55 reg.
