What second car????

Hi guys,
Im thinking of getting a second car, budget of £3k (not alot i know), id like it to be a 4x4 diesel, im looking at everything from Hi Lux Surfs, Rav 4s and Discos....Its basically something i can pic the kids up in when i have to collect them, or to drive up to the north of Scotland when i dont want to take the Z due to snow etc..............any suggestions?

Although I run old Jeeps for winter.... and I love them.... they are not quite as rugged and bulletproof as people think.

the engines are good (I only run the 4.0 petrol versions though)... the later V8s can have head gasket issues.

auto boxes are ok up to about 90k miles... then start to panic about everything.

rust is a big killer of them, I've just had to replace my front axle on my new one... this is after my old one failed an MOT with 5 pages!!

electrics are another week area, as are the boot stuts for some reason.

Apart from that, I've never been stuck, and they have never let me down... I've pulled plenty of new SUVs back on the road after people realised they aren't very good.

my suggestion for you OP.... a Mitsubishi Shogun/Pajero.

they can do everything off road, never get stuck, and with the 2 I've owned, far more reliable than most.... I should listen to my own advice really...

failing that, an older Audi quattro avant, with winter wheels and tyres will do 98% on road bad weather duties...

I never had a problem with it in the snow or mud etc. The only real downside to a 4x4 car for road use is ground clearance IMHO.

The one I bought cost £800, already had ~250k miles on the clock and was a cat C write off..... I ran it as my dogs car for a little over 5 years (so it went to lots of muddy places), put another 65k miles on it in that time... never spent a penny on servicing (apart from the odd oil change)... got about 35mpg.

Eventually it failed it's MOT... so I gave it away rather than spend money on it!

Definitely about as cheap as motoring gets!

Why cant they all be like that?
 
Series 2 disco, mine was a spare for the dogs for ten years and all I ever replaced was a fuel pump and an alternator.

Clocked up 100k on a 78k 2.5td at around 35 mpg.

Would Defo get another the spares are so available and cheap.

At your budget consider a 2 litre diesel Skoda Octavia Estate - with the savings in mpg you'll be able to fit winter tyres?

We're on our second - first one kept for 10 years and 180K never missed a beat (still in use) - second one is a wonderfully comfortable smooth and powerful car (go for the higher spec) - still well over 50mpg on a run loaded - we've found them a great second car.

Subaru Impreza estate? Just bought a tidy 2001 model as a winter run around for the GF. 2.0 auto, 177k on the clock, FSH, one lady owner from new - A bargain at £600. :thumbsup:
 
A mate has got a RAV4 - economical and comfortable although for your budget you'll have to go for an early model - was looking for weeks for a decent Discovery for my daughter and her extended family - every one we looked at that was over 5 years old had rust problems ( every one with rust in the chassis ) Bought a seven seater 2003 VW Sharan Diesel in the end - with 119k miles but drives like a dream and returns 40mpg even in London where she lives.
 
RAV4 best of the bunch, fun to drive, jap engineering so will rarely let you down (mine never did, or maybe just once when it saved my ex when she rolled it when DD) :rofl:
