What price is reasonable to paint front bumper?

Hi,

I’m going to a local bodyshop at lunch time to get a quote to respray my front bumper on my Z4. It’s Sterling Silver and has a light scuff on one corner. Also the paint is flaky in a couple of places so will require some prep to get a good surface to paint. I’d guess it’s been resprayed in the past to cover stone chips, but not done very well. Any ideas what is a reasonable quote for this work?

Also, will they paint the bumper on the car and blend it into the surrounding panels, or will they take it off?

Thanks,

Dan

they will match the paint with the BMW paint code from your car, then either mask it off or take the bumper off

I would say for a complete respray of a M bumper - between £250 and £350 (unless you know them?)

That's what I had in mind (well, hoping for £250 to £300!)

PS. I no longer own the M, this is for a 3.0, so standard bumper.

I'd guesstimate £150-£300 - but I'd not bother getting it blended as the bumper always seem to look a slightly different shade IMO.

How they do it will be decided by the discussion you have with them and their normal working practices. This will also have an effect on the price.

I'd ask them to paint it off the vehicle to avoid any risk of overspray - but that might cost a little more due to added cost of removal/fitting.

My old 3 series I caught the front of it so it needed filling and prepping but cost £260 which I thought pretty reasonable.

Getting mine done for £180 + VAT at a local body shop in Leicester. The guy has been doing bodywork for over 40 years and really knows his stuff, would happily recommend if anyone wants details in the future.

Will do, thanks for the info.

I’m taking it to a very highly regarded bodyshop at lunch time for a quote. They have restored a lot of classic cars, very early Bentleys, Ferraris etc. so have a very good reputation, I just hope they’re not too expensive! I have a couple of other bodyshops to go to tomorrow too.

Depends whether you want it blended in, and whether you are happy for them to paint it in situ or prefer to have it removed. Personally I would rather have it removed, so that the rest of the car doesn't get contaminated with overspray. I does happen, no matter how well some think they can mask the car off.

Wrong.

Remove and Refit
FRONT BUMPER AND FITTINGS
Repair
FRONT BUMPER
Paint
FRONT BUMPER
Charges
EPA Charge £6.00 Mop front end £60.00

Labour Cost £279.00
Parts £0.00
Paint and Materials £169.00
Charges £66.00
Sub Total £514.00
VAT £102.80
Total £616.80

Seems very expensive. I suppose you get what you pay for, but this was twice the price I had in mind.

It's worth noting this includes mopping the front end of the car, but that was only £60 + VAT.

What a rip off - Does this garage repair insurance claims by any chance?

Their website says this:

We are a Honda, Nissan and Mitsubishi approved bodyshop. We are not approved by any insurance companies but you will still receive a very high level of service

They did say there was a lot of work involved in removing the flaky paint from the bumper, but it is contained to within a small area. It's not the whole thing.

Why not get a local repair.....they charge about £75, and if the whole bumper doesn't need painting, then it could be worthwhile.....just one of these dent guys who repair and spray and you're done.

I'll post a photo up of it later on. I think I'd rather have the whole thing done properly, probably a bit too much for a Smart repair type.

if you are prepared to pay that, then all good

Althought its over £300 on what others have paid (mine was damaged around the fangs, also bad flaking all along the top)

No, I'm not prepared to pay that. Maybe for my immaculate M when I had it, but not a 90k mile 2003 car!

My bumper had a crack, which needed plastic welding, all the number plate holes plastic welding, and then recoloured as it was silver.

no way would i pay that much!

See above - I paid £240 at BMW with the benefit of their warranty. They've made a nice job of it too.
