Okay so I got a DA and I'm getting on fine with it very happy with results been using Scholl 17 + and meguiars 105 on the car and its coming along nicely
But am I doing it right ? I've been applying it by hand and then using the DA with a waffle pad to polish it and then a hard white pad but is this right ? really could do with some advice on what pads to use for what
Also my bonnet has a few scratches in the clear coat which I just can't seem to shift with the scholl 17+ :(:(:(

depends how deep the scratches are... plus BMW hard paint is a bit of a slog for a DA...

how are you working the polish?? work area, speed, time, method etc.... all will add up to how well the polish/pad combo works...

what 'white' pad is it??? i.e. what make of pad, being hard, it sounds like a polishing one... so that's ok...

what, if anything are you refining the 105/S17 with?

Hard pad with a medium cut paste by any manufacturer will start to cut back the laquer.

BMW paint is pretty hard,so plenty of passes with the pad maybe needed..

If all the pad/paste differences are confusing then go for the 3M system of pad/compound.............Easy life..

Its a firm white pad I've been working on small areas at a time with a speed of 3k the scratches are light maybe I'm just not be brave enough what pad should I be using to polish car with :? A really think I have a lot to learn but the car does look nice but I know it could be better

for a DA, I would suggest a work area of no bigger than 12" x 12"

put a few small drops of the S17 (for example) straight on your polishing pad.

start at speed 1 and spread the polish about your work area, for a couple of passes (left to right)

put the speed up to 3 and do the same, you are trying to heat up the polish ready to use...

then right up to 5 on a DA, putting more pressure down right on the pad, and slow your movements...

do that for maybe 4, 6, 8 passes, you'll have to decide... but the polish should be going clear...

then back down the speed, off the pressure and another couple of passes to finish that section off...

now, this is only a guide... I've not even touched if its original paint, what readings of the paint you've got etc etc... just a quick guide that's (hopefully) a bit of a help...

for some video help, go onto YouTube and search for "junkman" his videos are pretty good.

Thanks for taking the time to reply  one last thing what's a good finishing pad to use

Si-forks is tapatalking

I still use my 3M pads..... on a rotary mind you... so that would be either the blue or black ones...

I think the Chemical Guys Hexlogic pads are used quite a bit....

as long as it's nice and soft

Sorry to jump on the thread but what polish / pad would you recommend on a rotary on the zed paint?

Looking for medium paint correction. Nothing serious just light scratches.

I've just done my Zed here:

http://www.z4-forum.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=50951

for it I used a 3M yellow pad with Scholl S17, then refined with 3M black pad with S40...

the actual 3M polishes are good as well... and Megs 105 / 205 combo...

It's just down to how you work and personal taste... some polishes are better suited to some people...

Oooh...same colour as mine too.

I'll have a good read.

Thanks

I used yellow hex logic to cut through the swirls, and scratches. The paint on mine is like concrete, finished it of with blue 3m pad.
However I will be going at it again, to obtain 100% correction (well I won't get there but got to aim high)
