What other cars did you consider when buying your Z4?

I had (still have it) a remapped E39 530d Manual, had it 2.5 years and its a brill car. thought of wanting a newer car and for 2 weeks was hell bent on a 645 convertible. saw lots, just waiting for the right one... then saw Tax was M class and 475 a year which i sort of didnt want to pay.. so looked at a Mini Cooper JCW and was quite smitten.. then saw a private sale of a 645 Conv at £8k and it was back on...
Then by chance saw a Z4 3.0Si on an 06 plate. thought "hello". a few emails and £1000 off the selling price and a deal was done..

anyone want a 530d that flies... ive got one!!

SLK +1. Previous car was SLk and was looking to replace it. Then saw Z4 for almost half the price. That and the fact that it is black and the wife loves it swung the deal.

Got to admit, I do miss the excellent wind blocker I had on the SLK.

Unlike SLKDriver, I find the Z4 boot far more useable. No messing around putting the roof up to get things in and out of the boot!

Certainly don't miss the space saver spare. My wife had a puncture in the SLK. Some kind sole stopped and helped before I could get there. Di****ad pushed the special (shorter) wheel bolts to one side and fitted the space saver using the longer bolts. Result, need new hub, etc, etc. That puncture cost me over £300 - plus the cost of a new tyre!!!!!

- Nissan 350z
- E46 M3
- Audi S4
- TVR Cerbera
- Lotus Elise

Chose the Z4 coupe in the end because it was in my price range, insurance was reasonable, good mpg and something you can drive everyday. Plus the most important thing for me was the rarity of them. Also it's a BMW :)

We were trading from a 2005 Mini Cooper with 30k which was an 'ok' car which we'd owned for 3 years. We'd owned an RX-8 (piece of rotar-ied uninspirational crap) for 3 years and the Mini had been a step up! Had a Mini JCW Works for a week on loan - hated it as it just wanted to be fecked every time you got in it, the interior was awful and I looked a proper tit in it, too, Plus it was ROCK HARD to drive. Looked at other Mini variants...no, no, maybe, no etc. Boxster S flirted with us for an hour or so, but no. Didn't want one of those understeering-Audi-thingies. So, we'd had a very late E46 coupe and thought 'maybe an ALPINA touring version'...but only auto available :x and the insurance costs were potty. Then thought 'ooh, Roadster S' . 1st drive, we both wanted one. By the 3rd drive, we'd found 'the one' 8)

SLK 55 AMG - Too girly and awful auto box
350z ltd ed - cost too much for the performance
911 - £4k over budget for a good one
Z4mc blue with cream interior - over budget but I still love this car
Z4mr - drove one and what an engine, bought one.

Had an RX8 for three years and let it go after a bad winter, it was very twichy in the wet, impossible to drive in any snow or ice. So we sold out and bought a new 4x4, safety for the family the biggest consideration. a year and a half later decided we had to get a car that we enjoyed driving, for fun days out and weekends, thought about another RX8 but running costs are so high, looked at MX5 and TT and then Z3, discovered that prices were dropping on z4 and bought a 53 roadster 3.0,. We both love the car, a lot more stable than the RX8 and the best bit the roof comes down. Now considering a newer Z4. and an older 4x4.

I bought the Z without having driven it. Saw it on the net and that was it....didn't really have anything else in mind. Well I did, a 20 K more Vantage in white. I kerbed the wheel on the test drive too :headbang: and had to pay for the refurb.

Lease worked out to £1000 a month, which was scary

I was very much torn between fast and 4 seats or fast and 2 seats..

With a ~12k budget it was one of these:

2 seats
- Porsche Boxster - little to old in my budget
- Nissan 350z - very tempted but could get over 'that' ass
- Honda S2000 - dated interior and lack of torque
- Lotus Elise - getting in and out daily would drive me crazy

4 seats
- Focus ST
- Astra VXR
- Megan Sport

I quickly realised I needed 2 seat and convertible took my Z4 out for a test drive and 1 week later I picked her up - 3.0si 25k mileage very very happy!

Had to replace my westy with something that was a similar price to the selling price of the westy. Thing is nothing can replace the westy for the sheer thug like shafting of your sences. I also wanted it to use each day so something like a chimera was out. The BMW 6 pot it the only one I could see fitted the bill.

I did consider stretching it a little and boxters come in close but you hear so many horror stories and I like the look of the z4. 350z was way too thirsty and far too action man (all plastic no balls) and the s2000 appeals but you have to rev it too much apparently. I like the sedateness of the z4 and that it's power is always there.

Would love anything with a v8 next something classic that idles with that lumpy v8 on carbs sound.

I looked at the RX8 but decided it was just going to cost to much to run as a daily driver. I really wanted an Elise but again as a daily driver I decided it was just to impractical, then decided on the Z4 once I drove one I knew I had to have one. Certainly no regrets after having mine 14 months I think I love it more now then when I picked it up !
