Any preference with regards engine oil for my 2003 3.0i? Am sure this will have discussed many times before, aplogies in advance.

Depending on the mileage of your car, if it's over say 50k then I would be using a fully synthetic 5w-40 rather than the 5w-30. Personally I use Petronas Syntium, if it's good enough for AMG and Mercedes formula 1...

The reason for the different grade is that some m54 engines can use a little between changes. Mine used to use maybe 400ml between changes, but uses none in the 5w-40. I haven't noticed an increase in fuel consumption either.

Hi Mike

Its just hit 60k miles. It had an inspection 2 when i bought it in April at 54k miles. Its stood for 3 weeks in the garage, i checked the oil at the weekend and it was above the minimum level. I would imagine the oil could just need warming up as amber light came on very briefly. Coolant temperature gauge was where it should be (midway).

Cheers too Marlon.

I opted for the Petronas Syntium 5W-40, only needed around half a litre, although when I checked the oil again it looked a little dirty, considering it was changed 6 months ago, will do and oil and filter change over the winter months, in preparation of my French road trip next year.
