In reg to the filter, as mentioned get a Genuine BMW one from your local main dealer. They always fit bang on and can be had for less than aftermarket alternatives if the dealer provides good discounts…

I wasn't being snarky...I was interested. A US gallon is smaller than a UK gallon and I've been slightly confused when buying fluids in North America, specifically, I over-filled my uncle's big block Dodge...
I have always used Valvoline Synpower 5W40. A superb oil that although not the cheapest, is probably one of the best and it also carries BMW approvals.
