What oil? LL-01 or LL-04

Hi all

My 35i seems to be loosing oil. I have no time to get it looked at yet so I want to top it up to see how bad it is. I don't really see any oil on the road where I park. Iust admit I am not a fan of the electronic dipstick.

What oil should I use? I see it recommends LL-01 and I can only find one Castrol edge 5/30 A3 B4.

Can I use LL-04. Some places say I can but I am not sure.

BMW Longlife-01 FE Is BMWs preferred N54 oil…

But any 5w30 0W-30 that meets API SN+ or SP is good

What are the preferences of the masses?

I recently changed the oil, and since changing to Castrol 0-30W, there has been a lot of oil leakage from the head gasket, and sometimes it leaked into the intake manifold and smoked.
Since changing to Mobil 5-40W, there has been no leakage so far.
Does the brand or viscosity make a difference?

I put Castrol 0W-30 in my 28i (N20) just over 12 months ago and no leaks at all.

I used Valvoline European Vehicle Full Synthetic SAE 5W-40 which is BMW LL-01 & LL-14FE+
Though I'm in California I always had good results with it with previous cars
