What oil are you using in your S54?

I'm due an inspection 2 and considering all my oil options. I know Castrol TWS has been the oil of choice but I'm hoping the technology has moved on especially with the development of nano oils.

Friends with Porsches, track cars and other high powered cars are having great results with Millers Nanodrive oils, anybody here using them? The Z4M is my daily and cold start protection is important, it's used for short journeys during the week with the odd enthusiastic jaunt at the weekend.

All input appreciated.

I'm using Shell

Yep me . switched both engine & gearbox to Millers around 2k ago
Used their products before & rate them highly , dearer than Castrol but prompted by the potential engine woes thrown up i believe heat is a factor & the Millers is known for running cooler as well as better cold start viscosity

i recently had insp2 and was disappointed that redish used the older Castrol. The new shell apparently is a real step forward, This could be BS however....

I think if you change the oil regularly - at least once between services - the gains will be marginal using different oils unless you run the car hard all the time. At least that's my theory. The Castrol ain't s**t oil after all. That said, be interested in whether anyone sees some sort of noticeable improvement in something from using newer oils.

I know companies that develop (not just service) within other marques such as Hartech with Porsche or Litchfield with GTR and Ferrari are finding better oils than the ones recommended by the manufacturer.

Would be interesting to hear if anyone knows of a firm that have done significant testing within the BMW field? From what I understand the Shell/Castrol meet the oem specification but now there are oils which surpass that. The Castrol to Shell move by BMW was mostly a financial and I'm sure there's minimal difference between them.

Just did my oil and filter last weekend

Didn't get the Castrol as they don't sell it,
So it's BMW twin turbo shell they use now

Seems all good:)

I recently changed oil and moved to the new Shell oil now being sold by the US BMW dealers.

Any info to back that up? Not being an arse but I'm quite happy with Castrol unless there's a good reason to change......

not really tbh, but after a conversation with the guys the do my oil analysis they kinda convinced me, but what do they know??? actually..... they have tested 1000s of S engined bmws and monitored wear patterns / bearing etc over long usage so i kinda took what they said alittle more seriously than your average joe talking smack on the internet.

No- one is asking you or anyone to do so... but i will be moving over to it next year.

TWS 10W-60 is what was put in mine earlier this year by CPC. Still the choice of M specialists, it would seem.

I'd use Petronas Syntium, because it's cheap and I'm Malaysian, but I'm pretty sure it's 80% palm oil and 20% satay sauce.

It's probably not the original Castrol TWS as that was replaced by Castrol Edge a while back, but they're probably using the 'TWS' moniker to pull the marketing strings of those people who used the original TWS.

I think the product is now called 'Castrol Edge Professional TWS 10w-60 FST Titanium'.

Actually, sorry, I was mistaken. TWS was put in by Cooper Ipswich and was procured wholesale, but your point about the re-marketing is probably correct because the SKU says "Edgetws Ref 83122232310".

I'm buying the oil for any changes from now on. Routine services give me the willies.

Is the shell Helix Ultra 10W60 different to the Shell based M Power turbo nutter bolllox sold by the Stealers?
