Car is saying 150 miles to the next service (oil) so figure I better get on this. Planning on taking it to Sopers but want to save some spondoolies and get the oil myself.

Cann anyone confirm what oil I should get and where from?

Thanks

#69 uses 0W/30 and I get it from Opie Oils online. Castrol Edge fully synthetic.

+1 they do a service pack which includes the right amount of oil and the filter

I'd normally recommend OpieOils for the standard Castrol Edge 10w60 for M Engines, but their pricing seems to be all over the place lately, and only worth buying from them if they've got a special offer on as you have to pay delivery as well.

Currently Opie are asking £44.99 plus delivery (although you do get a 'free' 1L top-up bottle), whereas Halfords are asking £35.99.

BTW, make sure you get 'Edge' and not 'Edge Sport' as they're slightly different products - and the 'Sport' version is not BMW approved.

They don't offer this for the //M version any more - possibly as they were selling the service pack for cheaper than you could buy the same quantity of oil from them :P

Thanks guys. but I'm a bit confused. The service pack you mention the oil is Ow30. But then it is said BMW recommend 10w60 So which is it? :D

I'm going to want to get the car serviced at a dealer so as well as wanting to put the best oil in the car, I also want to ensure I've got a Full Service history from BMW using their approved parts.

Is it definitely worth while sourcing the oil yourself? Do the dealers charge silly money for it? Or are we talking a fiver or so difference?

It's 10W-60.

You actually need 5.5litres of oil for the S54 engine so you need to buy 6litres of oil. Dealers will charge you about £80 or more just for the oil, but they do allow you to provide it and they will charge you the labour.

Also tell the mechanic NOT to overfill the engine because this can cause serious problems, and even BMW stealerships get this wrong. :headbang:

Dependent on the age of your car, some stealers will do a discount on servicing on older cars. Personally, I use a good Indy for the service record but do a lot of other stuff myself.

Cheers buddy, exactly what I was after. So looks like its definitely worth ordering yourself then. I'll get on it.

Any others to try apart from Opie?

i noticed (totally in passing so i paid no real attention) that halfords have an offer on castrol edge atm. might be worth looking. doubt they have the correct oil.

as others have said, it's 10w/60 and imperative that you use the correct stuff. so retain the purchase invoice for your records, in case you want to sell in the near future... :)

Good call James, Halfords have it for £35.99. Amazon also have it for £35.99. Opie Oils is £50 delivered (although comes with an extra 1 litre bottle) They say they price match so if they do it for £35.99 inc th 1 litre oil??

i hate oil service time, the added coolers add 2 litres to the oil capacity.... makes things expensive.....

im using edge as per bmw specs

How can you call an extra £20 of oil every 3000-6000 miles 'expensive' when you keep spending £000's on whatever mod is next in your list :P

I have the car booked for oil service on Monday ( after all the confusion with my service intervals)

So just to confirm its 10w-60 castrol edge , 5.5 lt?

what else gets done during oil service ? When should my brake fuid get changed ?

Cheers , Jamie

So true! I just checked for nearest store to me that has oil in stock...Mansfield f.f.s. :o So I've ordered on line as my oil service is due this summer.

After some emails from Opie they have undercut Halfords and Amazons £35.99 delivered. I've got x3 4litre coming to me for £105

Figured 12 litres gives me x2 services :) (I have the M3 to consider too so it made sense)

I bought about 40 litres of the stuff (on offer at the time) when I first bought my car, as I was expecting it to have a service schedule and appetite for oil like my M5 did.

Took me about 3 years to use the stock up as it didn't drink a drop in the 6000-7000 miles between interim/scheduled services.

Halfords delivered My oil this morning :( Wrong stuff! Container has leaked very slightly so Halfords don't want it back.

I now have 4 litres of Castrol Power 1 4T 10-30 motor cycle oil which is free to anyone who wants it!

I'll be at the Yorks meet on 13th May so if anyone is interested p.m. me. First come first served!
