What new car ?

You seem to have tried most cars worth trying in this price bracket. What about a Masarati 4200 or a slightly older Spider. Won't be cheap to run but is a very special car that will hold it's value.

you say you have had a cayman im thinking of getting one as a matter of interest how was it for reliability what you think running costs would be not including insurance tax and petrol and im thinking of one that has just been serviced so would not need service for two years im thinking of having one for a couple of years what would you expect my running costs to be? how was yours ?

Have thought about a massa but was worried that if something serious went wrong with it it would cost me a fortune and cayman was great and cost me nowt although i only had it for six months never had to tax or service it and it was good on fuel and i sold it for a bit more than i paid for it, Nice car just not that special but glad i have owned one, I did quite a few mods to it though and made it my own,

ah it looks nice in red although not seen one in red in the flesh . . was it a cayman S cant quite see the tailpipes as im using my phone and picture very small . . how do you rate the 2.7 Cayman to the cayman S for performance as i have not driven either yet but im set on one . . which is best colour you think or which colour to avoid :) sorry to go on as you might not know with not having one for so long .

I would give very serious thought before chopping in the MC for a Cayman. As great as the Cayman is, whilst it is easier to live with, the overall ownership experience is less special.

Having to ask the question what to buy instead of the MC almost gives you the answer. For the price these cars are commanding, there is nothing comparable in my opinion.

I like to change my main car every couple of years just to try something else. I'm now however into my third year of MC ownership and the fifth year of Z4 ownership but can see nothing that I could afford to buy/run that excites me as much as the MC still does so the car stays.

I understand the opinion about the M6 being wrong on a number of levels but in my opinion, this comes close to being a worthy car to move to if you can accept its shortcomings. It certainly is a bargain buy as ot sufferes from the perception of being expensive to run. My question is "compared to what?"

My local dealer says expect at least 10mpg less from the M6 than the MC. Whilst that is a figure that I would feel, it's not unreasonable for the overall package you get. Servicing is not cheap but again, for a car like this it doesn't sound like bend you over the table and take this without lubricant plus give me a body part expensive either. The thing to remember the M6 is bloody cheap to buy.

Regarding holding onto it as it will be a sought after classic in 10 years. If you can afford to wrap it up and tuck it away then fine but in 10 years i would hope there would be something as special as the MC is now. I would rather drive mine into the ground now and have a great time doing it. Life is not a rehearsal and that blast accross country now is something I'd rather have as a memory in 10 years than a dream of what the car could be used for.

All of this is just using lots of words to say simply, there are lots of other cars, some quite nice but in my opinion, nothing a special as the MC for the giveaway bargains they are today. Did I see a nice one on hear with mileage a little leggy at close to £15K? Double that and there is nothing else I'd want but for £24K, I'd rather stick with what you've got and put the extra into something else other.

Pesonally, I've put what I would have spent on a newer car into a classic car. This gives lots of fun and an alternative to the MC which makes the MC feel even more special when I come back to it.

Have thought of M5 but cant be putting that amount of super plus in a car
Ideally you would do what I did and simply ADD an M5.
Best advice ever

Agree with you but I don't see these as mutually exclusive alternatives. Drive it hard but don't thrash it. Look after it as best you can afford, mechanically and aesthetically. Over time there will be fewer and fewer examples left - and you will have the great memories as well as the collector’s piece. A car that has never been driven, only locked away in airtight storage is worthless IMHO.

Had a s and a normal cayman the normal 2.7 is uder powered but still great car just can get a bit annoying when you have a hot hatch up your bum and you can pull away down the straghts not a problem round the bends though as for colours you take your own view on that but my red one looked good, they can look a bit wierd from some angles though, Just got mine out the garage and it does look good think i will go for a little run, :)

Going to view a noble at 2pm today will let you know what i think later, see if playalistic is right about these things,

I've always thought the GT3 is the Z4MC's big brother. That's what I'll be looking for in a couple of years. How much are 996GT3's going for?

I suspect 997 values will fall quite rapidly now the 991 is about to come out, especially as the 'first drives' appearing on Autocar and others suggest its a massive step up from the 997.

The only other thing to consider might be a Megane R26R - not as quick but if you track your car these are supposed to be a peach (and a rare sight too).

Drove a mates R26.R a few months back. Not many cars demand to be driven as quickly as they do. Very rapid car, and a hell of in induction roar!

997's are starting to creep into the mid to high 20's now. Dove house motors had a C2s with 35k up for £27.5k last week. Real good value that....

Normal 997 are a bit boring and not that quick, gt2/3 still expensive, R26R, if it was just for me would condsider one but theres no way my misses would be getting in and out of them seats and putting a harness on every time we went anywhere in it, (and it's still a renult at the end of the day although a bloody good one) Tried the noble to day and there not for me, Quick car quite comfy but starting to look a bit dated now bit of a bugger to get in and out of and a bit kit car, ish, Had my coupe parked next to it and the coupe justed looked so much nicer and everyone looks at you in the noble and i am not sure wether there thinking wow or what the bloody hell is that thing, So not for me, Last attemp tomorrow going to look at new shape m3 and if thats not bloody good am going to keep my beast,

It is a blue one not sure what the exact colour is, looks nice but just need to try one to see if i like them as my buyer won't wait much longer so need to make a decision,
