What makes a car fun?

Was out on the Zed this afternoon and it got me thinking what do I enjoy about driving.

Sure the power, acceleration and engine noise is very addictive but I'm not sure what else I enjoy.

ive never driven a lightweight lower powered car (or been on a track day) so I'm not quite sure what to expect. I'd imagine perfecting gear changes and cornering can be quite rewarding.

That's easy, putting the roof down & listening to the engine climb from 2k to 8k

Or putting then roof down & driving down a deserted B road at 2am on a starlit night. :D

Or putting the roof down & gunning it around Spa with your son sat in the passenger seat. :driving:

There's a theme here somewhere.

I haven't had a soft top for about 30 years, so it's great to go topless and these cars are quite snug with the roof down, I love the exhaust rumble and the sports button.
I also have a MR2 MK2 and although it has a smaller engine, because you sit so low it feels so connected to the road and it brings out the yob in me

Well if I'm honest along with the power, acceleration and engine noise I also like the attention it gets.
The day a bought it I had the guy behind the till at the petrol station wanting to know all about it (despite a queue forming behind me), I had a guy walking by give me a thumbs up (yes, it was definitely a thumbs up), another guy in a red convertible from the 1950's pulled up at the lights and nodded his appreciation, and I've lost count of all the 'rubber necking' as I drive by :D

Got to admit I like this as well. I've lost count of the number of people who come over to look and talk, usually when I'm parking the zed.

Apart from that it's top down on a sunny day, rock music on the stereo, smell of leather upholstery.

Its a combination of many things:-
- The sound
- The performance
- The weather
- The roads
- The admiring looks
& The people you are out driving with...

When it all comes together, you cant stop smiling !

I just love the free revving engine of the old 3.0 si. I have been driving diesels for years now and have got used to them so the Z4 was like a real revelation to me. I love the way the power comes on, the auto box is sweet and steering so positive.

Pretty much all of the above - it always makes me smile when people like the car, usually women / kids, and the induction sound from WOT from 4k is addictive, pushing the limits enough through the bends to get a bit of twitchyness, roof down on a sunny day, exhaust popping, twisty roads, downshifting mid corner to kick the rear out.. Every time I go to sell my Z I go for a drive and come back so attached, I absolutely love it :driving: I love the conversations it starts with other petrol heads, I love the fact that spending $20 on fuel that lasts me under an hour doesn't feel like time wasted, I love that it has a character..

2-3 years later and I still can't walk away with looking back at least twice, and I still get excited heart palpitations when I walk in the garage and drop the roof from the fob.

Out of everything I enjoy about driving, I enjoy the 'feeling' that the whole package gives me.. and that's something that non-car people never seem to understand

No roof is definitely a good start but to be honest I've been driving a 9 year old Ford Ka that we've got for my daughter to learn in and there is definitely fun in exploring the limits at pretty low speeds in a basic, narrow tyred, low powered car. Reminded me why I actually enjoy driving.

Haven't looked, but bet ya there's a Ford Ka forum :D
